The NSL 2025 playoffs continue, with league leaders Barak FC set to face Nagaland United Sporting Club (NUSC) in the second playoff on March 25. The NSL final is scheduled for April 1.
Earlier, the playoff was preceded by a kickoff programme, with Minister for Rural Development & SIRD Metsübo Jamir gracing the event as the Special Guest.
In his address, Jamir lauded the NSL as a milestone for football in Nagaland, highlighting its role in fostering unity and creating economic opportunities. He emphasised that football has always been an integral part of Naga identity, led by pioneers such as Dr T Ao.
He pointed out that the NSL is not just about the sport but also about breaking barriers and creating employment opportunities. He cited players from every district playing in different teams, denoting that there are no barriers in games and sports.
Teams are formed, and bonds of friendship are created. NSL is a very important aspect of unity among Nagas, Jamir maintained.
To this end, he expressed hope that more teams would participate in the future.
The Minister also highlighted the economic impact of NSL, stating that the league has generated employment for over 800 people in various capacities. He added that with food services and spectators, the opportunities are endless.
“I hope that not only soccer but other sports will also follow such tournaments,” he added.
Apart from commending the organisers, he credited Abu Mehta, the Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, for his vision in creating something out of nothing.
He also lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for his active participation and contribution to the visionary initiatives taking place in Nagaland, starting with the NSL.
Guest of Honour Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor for Industries & Commerce, also commended the NSL for creating a thriving football ecosystem and urged public support for sports development in the state.
Among others, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports, and Benei M Lamthiu, Chairman of NSL and General Secretary of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), also addressed the gathering.
The event also featured the presentation of in-house created ‘Green Medals,’ which the organisers stated were crafted to the highest European standards with environmental considerations.
