Kohima Press Club reiterates need to raise issues in interest of journalists
Kohima, January 20 (MExN): The Kohima Press Club (KPC) observed its 19th foundation day here at NSF Conference Hall on January 20.
KPC in a press note stated that in the absence of the president Alice Yhoshü, KPC vice president, Ng Solomon read out by the presidential address. He recalled how the Club came into being 19 years ago, initiated by a few likeminded journalists who had deep and genuine concern for the welfare of the press fraternity in the state Capital, making it the “oldest press club in Nagaland.”
“Battling challenges, the Kohima Press Club, which humbly began with a handful of members, has today evolved into a strong body with 62 registered members from both print and electronic media,” stated the message remembering the pioneers and former leaders of the Club with gratitude and respect for their efforts and farsightedness in steering the fraternity to where it stands today.
As the Club has, in the past, raised issues in the interest of journalists in the state which resulted in the government framing and improving policies for journalists, the message impressed on the need for the journalists to continue to raise its voices for the welfare of our growing fraternity.
Citing out the problems the media fraternity face from those who are “intolerant to expression of views” that are different from their own, the president’s message pointed out on how the journalists measure up to such challenges will largely depend on the how we, as responsible journalists, uphold truth and justice without bias.
“Even as the journalists will continue to face daunting situations in our professional lives, the message asserted that it must continue to uphold journalistic ethics,” it stated.
“On this occasion, let us all remind ourselves and reflect on our KPC motto: ‘To Serve’... As we celebrate one more milestone today, may we continue to remain steadfast and committed to upholding the dignified objectives of truth and information as a responsibility and service to our society,” the message asserted.
KPC advisors, Kopelo Krome, H Chishi and senior members exhorted the members. There was an exchange of gifts amongst the members actively participated by all. The programme was chaired by Narain B. Sagar, while Rana Chetri offered a prayer and the annual report presented by the general secretary, Atono Tsükrü Kense.
