One shot dead in Kohima

One person was killed in an alleged altercation with the police in Kohima on June 23. The incident occurred at the Old MLA Hostel junction, Kohima at around 4:30 pm as two persons accused of extortion were involved in an altercation with officers of the Kohima Police anti-extortion team. 


Police said that at around 3:30 pm, information was received from a trader, stating that two persons with weapons were extorting money from a shop in the name of a Naga political group.


Accordingly, the Kohima Police swung into action and the two were spotted near Y Junction, below Old MLA Hostel Junction.


Since it was a public place with shoppers around, efforts were made to apprehend the two with the use of minimum force, Police stated.


Narrating the sequence of events, a press statement from the Kohima Police said that as one officer approached them and asked them to surrender, one of them reportedly reached for his weapon. He was prevented from doing so as two officers pinned him to the ground and a pistol was seized from his possession.


In the meantime, the other was engaged with one of the police officers. He reportedly confronted one officer and tried to snatch a loaded weapon from the officer. In the ensuing scuffle, police said that the gun went off and he was shot.  


“While the miscreant aggressively tried to snatch the arm, the gun got fired hitting the miscreant from the left side of the neck,” the Police statement informed.


He fell to the ground and succumbed to the bullet injury on the spot. 


The deceased was later identified as one Khehuto I Assumi (35) of Lizutomi village under Zunheboto district. He was reportedly was serving as a Lance Havildar in the 164 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) before being discharged on medical ground in 2019.


The other miscreant identified as Aito Awomi (25), also from Lizutomi village, was taken into custody.


Police meanwhile informed that the family members of the deceased have been informed after observing all necessary formalities.


One .32 mm pistol, one magazine, one live round, one wallet belonging to the deceased, Rs. 1,610 in cash, one ID card, one ATM card, photo passports and one mobile phone was recovered from the deceased person. 


The police also seized the following items from the deceased person’s residence: Rubber seals of the OC, Zunheboto Police Station; Head GB, Lizutomi; Capt./Maj./Lt./Col MO I/C MI Room, 164 Infantry Battalion TA (H&H) Naga, round seal of 164 Inf. Bn. TA (H&H) Naga, MI Room, two stamp pads and several assorted fired bullet heads/pellets.


Meanwhile, one Nokia keypad phone, Rs 760 in cash, one voter ID and one Aadhaar card was recovered from the arrested person.
