Dimapur, April 8 (MExN): Orientation of the new guidelines on maternal death review was held at CMO’s office Chamber on April 8. The orientation was attended by members of the Maternal Death Review Committees.

Dr. Rebecca Y. Sema, DPO, RCH-UIP Dimapur in a press release stated that Dr. Rebecca as resource person reoriented the members on maternal death and the various common causes leading to maternal death in India. She stated that besides the medical causes, there are others contributing factors that leads to maternal death such as low socio-economic status, illiteracy, lack of transportation, early marriage, etc.

Dr. Rebecca stated that Maternal Death Review (MDR) was initiated in 2010 under National Health Mission, and to provide a proper response mechanism to MDR, it has been moved to Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR). The MDSR objectives are to strengthen the process and mechanism of Maternal Death Review and to institute a system of conducting Confidential Review into maternal death. The MDSR will be action-focused and all maternal deaths not only in institutions but also in community, will be reported and reviewed irrespective of the place and area of death.

Dr. Rebecca also highlighted the roles and responsibilities of the Facility-based MDSR Committees. With proper reporting and analysis of any maternal death, suggestive corrective measures can be taken to improve the service delivery and the preparedness of the patients to avoid preventable maternal deaths. She stated that a single maternal death can throw light into various issues at community level, during referral, facility level, district and state level and also provide an opportunity to act upon. Taking action to avoid maternal death is the main objective of MDSR. A case study was presented and discussed during the orientation.

The orientation was chaired by Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi, Chief Medical Officer Dimapur, Dr. Antoly Suu, Deputy CMO Dimapur and members of the Maternal Death Review Committees and Facility-based Death Review Committee, District Hospital Dimapur.
