Patkai, August 27 (MExN): The Department of Geology at Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) organised its third Lecture Series here on August 27.

Dr Watitemsu Imchen, Senior Geologist from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Dimapur, delivered the first lecture on “Tectonic Evolution and Geography of the Naga Hills and the Oldest Metamorphics of Nagaland.”

Using illustrative slides, Dr Imchen detailed the region's geological formation, stratigraphy, and exotic limestones. He elaborated on stratigraphy and the exotic limestones of Nagaland, highlighting significant metamorphic rocks, doistoliths, and the region’s tectonic complexity. He also discussed the Late Jurassic geography, particularly how Madagascar was once adjoined with India before drifting away, placing Nagaland’s geology within a broader global context.

During the interactive session, a professor inquired whether the Naga Hills belonged to the Naga side or the Burmese side, to which Dr. Imchen clarified that it lay on the Burmese side. Students also actively participated by raising several questions related to the topic, which further enriched the discussion.

The second lecture was delivered by Puloketo Achumi, Senior Geologist, GSI, Dimapur, on “Introduction to Landslides.” He elaborated on the basics of landslides, their morphometry, classifications, causes, and triggers. He also explained remedial measures and highlighted statistics on landslide occurrences in Nagaland. His talk provided a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by landslides in the state and their mitigation strategies.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Thokchom Devala Devi.
