People’s College, Mokokchung, held its graduation cum felicitation programme on July 30 at the College Auditorium, celebrating the academic accomplishments of its graduating students. The event was graced by Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, as the guest of honour.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr T Amongla, Principal, People's College, expressed pride in the achievements of the graduating students. Highlighting the college’s academic journey, she shared performance statistics from recent years, stating that the college achieved 100% results in 2021 and 2023, 86.66% in 2022, and 91.66% in 2024. In 2024, the institution produced two top-ranking students under the general category—Tongpangmei (Top 5 with CGPA 7.15) and Vino Awomi (Top 7 with CGPA 7.04)—in the Nagaland University UG (CBCS) Examination.

Dr Amongla noted, “Our students may not have been top achievers when they joined us, but with the dedication of our faculty and staff, they have transformed into students of distinction.” She credited the success to the collective efforts of teachers, administration, and supportive parents, while also acknowledging the newly inducted Board of Governors for their continued guidance.

The DC Mokokchung in his address, congratulated the graduates and lauded the faculty for their tireless efforts. Reflecting on the significance of graduation, he emphasized that it is not the end of academic pursuit, but the beginning of greater responsibilities. “Being a graduate puts you in a new club of society—where education must be complemented with character, humility, and moral values,” he said.

He urged students to remain humble, plan their journey wisely, and stay committed to the values instilled during their academic years. “The journey,” he remarked, “is more important than the destination. It’s in the journey that you learn the values that shape who you become.” Drawing from his personal experiences, he encouraged the graduates to cultivate curiosity, acquire knowledge from their surroundings, and constantly strive for improvement.

Akok Walling, Chairman of the Board of Governors, also addressed the gathering with a word of encouragement. Drawing inspiration from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, he praised the students for their achievements despite infrastructural limitations.

“It is not the infrastructure—it is the mind that matters,” he said. “You have made history, not because of perfect conditions, but because of your will to strive and succeed.”

Walling commended the new proprietors of the college for taking over not for profit, but for their love of society and commitment to education. He reminded students to remain rooted in their values and heritage, saying, “Tomorrow you may reach the moon, but do not forget your root. That is where your strength lies.”

Walling also stressed the importance of critical thinking, curiosity, and perseverance. “To doubt is human, and to ask is human,” he remarked, encouraging students to keep questioning and seeking answers throughout life.

A special prayer for the graduating batch was offered by Alemjungshi, Assistant Professor, Department of History.

Valedictorian Tongpangmei, who ranked Top 5 in the university examination, delivered the valedictory address on behalf of the graduating class, expressing gratitude to the faculty, parents, and peers who played pivotal roles in their academic journey.
