
Runaway policeman apprehended
KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUNE 10 (MExN): Kohima Police on June 9 nabbed two persons reported to be GPRN/NSCN cadres near Peducha for collecting ‘tax’ from trucks. One of the two was a police deserter and was on the wanted list of the Kohima police.
A press release from the SDPO, Kohima, Shouka Kakheto, stated that the arrested cadres, along with two others were collecting ‘tax’ from trucks at Lalmati. When police reached the spot, they sped off towards Dimapur. Two were chased down near Peducha and suppressed after a physical scuffle. The other two escaped, stated the release.
The arrested individuals were identified as ‘SS Lieut’ Niepukhrie alias Akhrieu Khana and ‘SS Sgt Major’ Lovito Awomi. The former of the two was a ‘havildar’ in the 14th NAP (IR), who had deserted the Nagaland Police on June 18, 2012 while on duty in Kohima. He had decamped with his service rifle (AK 47) along with ninety rounds of ammunition, three magazines and a radio set. The earlier case registered in South Police Station, Kohima in connection with the desertion has been revived and a separate case of extortion was registered at Zubza police station for further investigation, the release added.
The same day in Dimapur, one NSCN (IM) cadre indentified as an ‘SS ASO’ Mukhabo Mao was arrested from Dillai gate. A press release from the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur stated that the accused was ‘extorting money’ from trucks transporting sand from Assam. An amount of Rs. 8670 said to be the money extorted by the cadre was also recovered.
The release further stated that a cadre of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), identified as one Kabir Chandra was arrested from Chumukedima.
It was stated that police had been on the trail of the accused the past couple of days. Before the arrest, he was on an extortion-spree the last six months, threatening and harassing business establishments and night-bus ticketing counters located at the inter-state bus stand, Golaghat Road in the name of the KRA. His luck ran out on Monday when police eventually nabbed him after he directed some businessmen to Chumukedima to pay the money he had earlier demanded. The note further said that the accused revealed that he was formerly a member of the Kangpleipak Communist Party-Kokai Group and had joined the KRA recently.
