‘Pony & Cart Ride’ recreational event at Kigwema

‘Pony and Cart Ride’, a recreational event of the Hornbill Festival and first of its kind initiated by the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS), Government of Nagaland was inaugurated at Pony Farm, Kigwema on December 1 by R Khing, Advisor, AH & VS, Government of Nagaland.  

Speaking at the function, Advisor, R Khing cited that animals, both farm and pets play an indelible importance to humans, he pointed that their resources should be utilized to enhance economic and entrepreneurial avenues.  

“We are becoming too dependent on imports, even for consumption purpose,” the Advisor lamented. Khing also added that animal husbandry and animal farming has huge potential in the market as compared to other entrepreneurial avenues. He, therefore, called on all government officials and the public in general to cooperate and contribute in promoting such initiatives.  

Concerning the department, he said there is much to do and noted that pet animals will soon be launched. He further lamented that pack animal (pony, horse, and yak) although looked after by the state government here at Pony and Yak farm, Kigwema, had no yak seen in the vicinity.  

Alan Gonmei, IAS, Secretary, AH & VS, GoN who also delivered a short speech stated that other recreational centres such as pony treks can boost and attract visitors and tourists.  

The introductory address was delivered by Dr Aomongyang, Director, AH & VS. He later informed that the Pony and Cart Ride was a first of its kind for the Hornbill Festival. The riders are assisted by young boys and the event will be held on all the festival days alongside rabbit stalls, sale of indigenous items, photo-booths and other recreational stalls at the farm. Pony ride are fixed at Rs. 50 and Rs. 100.
