Rampant extortion

DIMAPUR, JULY 13 (MExN): Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association (NMDA) informed of an imminent business shutdown in Dimapur, if the constant menace of extortion is not controlled. According to a press release from the NMDA and appended by its president A. Ato Yepthomi, an emergency executive meeting was held in this regard, Saturday, July 13.
Business shutdown looms large in Dimapur
“All the Medicine Dealers expressed their deep grievances because of the unreasonable demand notes served to them by so many factions whereas medicines is a life saving commodity with a limited profit and the prescribed rates printed on the cover. Besides it is also a limited business in the service of the patients. Its is pathetic to note that the medicine dealers are served exorbitant demand notes and telephonic life threats by all possible factions…” stated the release. The threat has reached such a height that businessmen refrain from receiving calls from unknown numbers “thereby losing so many important calls also,” it added. Hence, the NMDA will be compelled to shutdown all medical outlets for an indefinite period till the NMDA are assured of redress of their grievances “by the Authorities of all the factions”.
The date when the proposed shutdown will begin is yet to be determined. Basu Damani, general secretary (Organisation) of the NMDA when contacted said that the date will be let known in the coming days. He further appealed all other business organizations to cooperate with the NMDA in their endeavour.
“The NMDA strongly appeals to the highest Authorities of all the factions to seriously review the taxation, especially on medicines by their cadres and direct them to refrain from threatening/extortion/taxing the humble medicine business fraternity who are tirelessly working for the interest of the people with limited profit and returns,” the release appealed.
The association also appealed the government of India and the state government to seriously look into the grievances of the business community and take the necessary steps to curb such anti-social activities.
