KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 7 (MExN): A community-led initiative by the New Ministers Hill Panchayat, Kohima, has helped bring significant improvement in security and cleanliness in the colony, particularly around the View Point area, after months of sustained roster duty by residents.
For the past several months, the Panchayat, youth leaders, and community members have been taking turns on roster duty, particularly at the View Point area, to check anti-social activities and restore a sense of order.
The initiative, according to the Panchayat, has brought “visible improvement.” Incidents of public drinking, theft, vandalism, and late-night disturbances, which had long unsettled the colony, have considerably declined. At the same time, the effort has strengthened community bonds, with residents cooperating in the process of safeguarding their neighbourhood.
The colony has also turned challenges into opportunity. Fees collected from defaulters are being reinvested into development works, installing streetlights and CCTV cameras, maintaining the playground, and putting up banners to raise awareness. “Every step is aimed at making the colony safer and brighter,” the statement read.
New Ministers Hill is home to important institutions like the Cathedral Church and Little Flower School, and the Panchayat underlined the need to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in and around these spaces. It also acknowledged the support of law enforcement agencies and thanked residents for their continued cooperation.
Looking ahead, the Panchayat called on all citizens to work hand in hand. It appealed to visitors to enjoy the View Point and its surroundings responsibly, whether on family rides or at the local eateries, by keeping the area clean and using dustbins.
