Kohima, July 22 (DIPR): The orientation workshop on implementation of Saakshar Bharat programme got underway at Japfu Hotel on July 22 with Minister for School Education & SCERT, Nyeiwang Konyak as the chief guest. The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education and Literacy. The Saakshar Bharat programme has been launched in the districts of Mon, Kiphire, Tuensang and Longleng in Nagaland.
Nyeiwang Konyak said literacy starts from home and to literate the whole family members, women folk play a vital role and said that the Government of India has taken the right decision in implementing the Saakshar Bharat programme, focusing more on women literacy. The Minister felt that the orientation programme was more important than the launching programme because the State, districts and village functionaries will be provided training on how to implement the programme.
Being from Mon district, the Minister said he is also one of the proud beneficiaries of the programme and hoped to benefit through the programme. He said for the effective implementation of the programme in Nagaland, the School Education department has planned to involve Church organisation, student leaders and other NGO bodies to support the programme and to eradicate illiteracy in the four districts. He however said that we should not forget the other seven districts as well if we are to achieve 100% literacy in the State.
Giving the keynote address, Joint Secretary, Ministry of HRD & Director General NLMA Jagmohon Singh Raju said that Saakshar Bharat means Adult Education and the mission of the programme is to establish a fully literate society through improved quality and standard of Adult Education and literacy. He explained that it is one of the Flagship programmes of the government, launched by the Prime Minister of India on 8th September 2009. The prime focus of the programme is on Women, though men are not excluded and special focus on SCs, STs, Minorities and disadvantaged sections of society.
He lauded Nagaland for achieving 80% literacy rate and 7% literacy gap, as shown in the recent concluded Census, which is the target of the National Literacy Goal. He explained that Adult Education is not only vocational education and it does not stop with the learning of 3R’s (Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic) but lies much more beyond that. Knowing the importance of environmental issues, water management, population etc and educating the people in these issues are also part of Adult education he said and without Adult education no society can prosper. He also mentioned that if the module planned for Saakshar Bharat programme is to be successful, it would be the first in Nagaland because Nagaland is far ahead of other State in communitization and communitization plays an important role in Saakshar Bharat programme. He said that the scheme aims to make the society more knowledgeable and informed, and requested support and sincerity towards the implementation of the programme. He concluded by saying that the centre will help and support the State and make Nagaland a showpiece of success for the entire North East.
Miss Nagaland, Hattinneng Hangsing, the Brand Ambassador of Saakshar Bharat programme for Nagaland also said that educated women tend to promote education and provide better guidance to all their children which is an essential quality in the present generation and promised to promote the campaign to the best of her abilities. Commissioner & Secretary School Education, Imkonglemba IAS, chaired the programme.
