Saakshar Bharat formally launched in Nagaland

Kohima | July 7 : Launching the flagship adult literacy programme- “Saakshar Bharat” in the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng & Kiphire here today, minister for school education & SCERT Nyeiwang Konyak appealed to the people to extend their cooperation in making Nagaland a total literate state. Nagaland along with the rest of the country have been implementing adult literacy programme over the years where positive impact were experienced, but the present flagship programme coined“ Saakshar Bharat” is a programme with a different approach, which will focus more on women literacy.
The minister stated that since the state achieved 80.11 % literacy rate as per 2011 census report, “it will not be hard to eradicate illiteracy from those who are still illiterates.”
With the implementation of Saakshar Bharat, the minister said, it is expected that the state would be more literate, even to the extent of achieving 100% literacy. The minister pointed out of 80.11% literacy rate in Nagaland, male literacy rate recorded at 83.29 % and female literacy rate at 76.69 %. There are 13, 57, 579 literate persons in the state in which 7, 31, 796 are male and female- 6,25,783. The minister said out of the total population of the state 19, 80, 602, the total child population of the age group of 0-6 years stands 2, 85, 981. If the child population in the age group of 0-6 years is excluded, the total illiterate population of the state is only 3, 37, 042. Out of this, 2, 67, 804 illiterate population belong to four districts, namely Mon, Tuensang, Longleng and Kiphire of our state.
Konyak stated that the state government has taken step for successful implementation of Saakshar Bharat in collaboration with the State Research Council (SRC) of Tripura, which is presently known as Resource Centre for Adult Education, Tripura, which is extending every cooperation in the field of –in developing basis primers, in conducting District Level Seminar on Saakshar Bharat programme, in conducting ‘Meet the Pradhan Campaign Program’ and in conducting training to Block Level Resource Persons. The minister further informed that the SRC, Tripura has developed six basic primers in six dialects, which have already been approved by the Director, Directorates of Adult Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development.  The other programme is to conduct District Level Seminar in Mon and Tuensang are under process, he informed. He also informed that the government may soon launch environment building programme with traditional folk cultural soft ware of Nagaland, which will be followed by setting up literacy centres at village level and adult literacy centre at cluster level.
Also speaking on the occasion, chief secretary Lalthara said the Saakshar Bharat programme will be eye opener for illiterate persons, which will take them to an another horizon of life. Saakshar Bharat, he said, would bridge literacy to adult people who cannot read and write, adding that it will open a new window to them. Earlier, introductory speech was given by Imkonglemba, commissioner & secretary school education & SCERT while Bendangkokba, member secretary SLMA chaired the function. The function concluded with vote of thanks by Khevito Sema, director, school education and mission director Saakshar Bharat.
