Imparts training on banana fibre extraction & handicraft making

Dimapur, March 4 (MExN): Housewives and unemployed youths were trained on ‘banana fibre extraction and handicraft making’ on March 3.

The one-day training was organized by STINER-TFC, SASRD, NU, Medziphema campus, Nagaland centre at the technology demonstration unit under the initiative of Prof Akali Sema, Dean SASRD and Project In-charge STINER-TFC.
The basic objective of the training programme was to create awareness among the native people to realize the economic values of the banana plant, the organizers stated in a press release on Thursday.

While addressing the concept of the training, Prof Akali Sema emphasized the importance of developing new skills and turning them into self sustaining business and how the centre can help in bringing in and introducing such relevant technologies for the benefit of the people.

This was followed by the first technical session where Dr Sentirenla Changkiri, Project Assistant, STINER-TFC presented on the concept of banana fibre extraction, craft making and its prospects in the State. She mentioned that abundance of both cultivated and wild banana are available in the region round the year but unfortunately people are yet to venture the value of its economical ways.

She also stressed on the mass production of the fibre while mentioning that the State was unable to meet its rising demand, and how collectively in the region this project can be made into a self sustaining enterprise.

The participants, 15 in total, were given a hands-on training by STINER staff on fibre extraction and basics on handicraft making. The closing session was conducted by Rokosieno Zao, Project Assistant, STINER-TFC.
