Semester system in NU from 2012

Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): As per directives of UGC, respective Board of Undergraduate Studies (BUGS) are carefully developing standard course curriculum towards introduction of Semester System in Undergraduate in affiliated colleges under Nagaland University beginning from 2012 academic session. It is expected that this will make the students highly productive and confident in this competitive world where both students and teachers will have to work much harder than before stated a press release issued by Nagaland University Dean, School of Social Sciences & Convener of Introduction of Semester System Prof. A. Lanunungsang.
The gists of the whole day consultative meet are as follows: Introduction of Credit System of workload; Continuation of both general and major stream of studies; Completion of the course in six semesters within three academic years; Introduction of Honors paper right from first semester; Internal  and External assessment system (30:70) having variety of things to teach and learn: giving freedom to affiliated colleges to develop a students’ friendly device in utilizing 30 marks of internal assessment suitable to local specific needs; Uniform pattern of curriculum having 5 units each per paper indicating clear objective of the paper; Fixing 40% pass marks both in internal and external paper maintaining minimum of 75% class attendance in each of the paper; Introduction of  Certificate/Diploma courses on different vocational subjects, in addition to normal courses; Implementation of semester system in phase manner; The need for revision/updating of the syllabi as and when required and preparation of two models question in each paper and the need for creation of required infrastructural facilities in every affiliated college.
 
Re-fixation of time framed for completion of the exercise:

1.  August 10, 2011: Completion of preparation of course curriculum by the respective BUGS and respective College Principals to submit their suggestions/proposals within July, 2011 to the respective BUGS Chairman/concerned Deans or to the Convener for consideration while finalizing the program.
2.    August 26, 2011: Joint BUGS Chairman meeting to finalize the Draft proposal at BUGS levels. At this stage also, constructive suggestions and comments from respective colleges may be sought since they are going to be the beneficiaries of this new programme.
3.    September 15, 2011: Final touch at the respective BUGS level.
4.    Review of draft proposal at Deans’ Committee level before the next A.C. meeting,
5.    Oct-Nov, 2011: Approval by Academic and Executive Council.
6.    Final touch by the respective BUGS within two weeks time that may be directed by Academic Council. EC.
7.    February 2012: Publication of combined Handbook on New Course Curriculum by Academic section.
8.    March 15, 2012: Distribution of Handbook/guidelines to all concerned. 
9.    Last week of April, 2012: Zone-wise Orientation program for College teachers to be initiated by University on Semester system for effective implementation of the programme. (Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung Zones, detailed prog follows.) 
10.  2012 Academic session: Introduction of Semester System in all the affiliated colleges uniformly. Respective College Principals are expected to take active initiatives involving all subject teachers in every affiliated college to make this program successfully
11.  May-June, 2012: Completion of meeting all requirements in every affiliated college, especially in private colleges in terms of recruitment of teaching faculties and supporting staff, arrangement of class rooms, laboratory, Library having adequate books etc. for successful introduction of semester system beginning from 2012.
