CM Rio congratulates Longkumer on his victory; expresses confidence in his abilities 

 

Kohima, February 7 (MExN): Sharingain Longkumer of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) today was elected as the Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

 

In the two-way contest, Longkumer, who was the consensus candidate of the ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) defeated his opponent Dr Imtiwapang of Naga People’s Front (NPF) by 7 votes.

 

According to report received here, out of 57 votes, Longkumer garnered 32 votes against 25 by Aier.

 

A first-time member of the house representing the 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency in Mokokchung, Longkumer was currently holding the post of Deputy Speaker in the 60-member House.

 

Election to the post of NLA speaker was necessitated following demise of the then NLA Speaker, Late Vikho-o Yhoshü on December 30, 2019.  Since then, Longkumer has been serving as the Speaker-in-Charge.

 

Meanwhile, taking to Twitter, Nagaland Chief Minster congratulated Longkumer on his victory and expressed his confidence on the latter's ability to discharge the Speaker's duties.

 

“I'm confident that with your qualification & sincerity with which you've been discharging your duties as Dy. Speaker, you'll conduct successful transaction of business of the House,” he added.

The Budget Session (5th session) of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, NLA resumed on February 7 after a gap of 20-days, after the Speaker in charge adjourned the House after ratification of the Constitution 126th  Amendment Bill, 2019 on January 17, the first day of the session.
