Shortage of teachers plaguing GHS Mon village, Chenloisho

KSU opposes policy of downgrading high schools in Mon district

Mon, August 27 (MExN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has said that the policy of downgrading High Schools in Mon District “should not be applicable since; the concerned authority is equally responsible for bringing out the worst results by not appointing subject teachers.”

Stating this in a press release on Saturday, the KSU informed that it had visited Government High Schools in Mon village and Chenloisho village on August 24 and 26 respectively, owing to the ‘nil results’ from the schools in the 2022 HSLC examinations.

As part of its ‘Education Reformation Visions 2021-23’ resolution, the Union had interactions with students from both the schools and had a co-ordination meeting with the stake holders from both the villages; and as such, highlighted various challenges and discrepancies in the schools.

According to the KSU, during its inspection, it was learnt that both the High Schools had shortage of subject teachers, the release stated.

In the Government High School Chenloisho, which was upgraded in the year 2012, the KSU pointed out that no English and Hindi teacher appointed till date. As a result, the School Management Committee (SMC) and Village Council recruited two teachers out of their own expenses, out of concern for the academic careers of the students, it said.

“On top of that the both the Government High Schools are functioning without Head Master and Asst Head Master till date.  It is also learnt that Government High School Mon Village too requires one English teacher and Maths teacher each,” the KSU stated in the release.

As per the KSU release, most teachers in both the schools are under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and are yet to receive salaries for almost six months. “Therefore, the Union questions the responsible authority as to how an unpaid teacher would be motivated to produce the best in students,” it added.

Further, the Union has also pointed out that the Primary sections in both the villages have been neglected by the concerned authority by not deploying adequate teachers. This, it said, is another factor for students not acquiring quality education thereby resulting in nil results.

Expressing resentment that the concerned department has been paying no heed to the deprivation faced by the students at grass root level, it appealed to the authority to work more on the upgradation of education at grass root level and for the deployment of adequate teachers.
