Soil day: Call to prevent environmental pollution

Longleng, December 6 (MExN): ICAR KVK Longleng celebrated World Soil Day on December 5 with the theme ‘Be the solution to soil pollution.’  

Speaking during the occasion, the chief guest of the programme, Deputy Commissioner Longleng District John Tsulise Sangtam, emphasised on individual efforts to prevent environmental pollution by reducing the use of single use plastic bags, cups, bottles which ultimately pollutes the soil and he added that the District Administration is making efforts to ban the use of plastics in the district. He also said that as most of the people in rural areas depend on agriculture as their main source of livelihood, the farmers should reduce the use of salt in their fields which not only deteriorates the soil but will ultimately affect their means of livelihood in the near future.  

Dr RK Roshan, SMS, Horticulture gave the highlights of the programme and the importance of soil health card was delivered by Namei, SRF. Soil Health Card along with fertilizers like Urea, SSP and MOP were distributed to 74 farmers followed by training on Soil health management during the technical session. The day long programme was chaired by Dr. Lily Ngullie, SMS (Animal Science).  

All together 82 farmers including officials from District Agriculture and Horticulture departments attended the programme.
