Kohima, September 25 (MExN): Former NPCC president, K V Pusa emphasized on the need for early solution to the long standing Naga political problem through collective effort.
Speaking during the concert organized in aid of Pesocha Baptist Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Ura Academy last evening a veteran Congress leader said solution to the Naga problem could be hammered out through collective effort of all sections of people. “Let us try to unite all groups for a purposeful resolution to our long pending political problem,” Pusa said.
He said that church being a strong organization could bring all sections of Naga people together and resolve the contentious confronting Naga people for many decades.
The Congress leader also emphasized on Nagas’ traditional system of conflict resolution where peace treaties and friendship festivals between different social groups. “There is a need for us to look into these principles of peace and social co-existence so that we can apply our contemporary society,” he said.
Pusa said this is important because today Nagas are faced with socio-political problems which have become not only divisive but also were leading to violence among intra-Naga groups. He urged church and all sections of Naga people to pray ceaselessly for peaceful resolution of Naga issue pending before them so that Nagas can also march ahead with the rest of the community in all aspects stating that Nagas were not less talented but have great opportunities and potentials to be a progressive society.
The former NPCC president also said 75 years is a long time in retrospect how far people have come since then. He said may be in the field of education and economic growth people have come a long way but it could have been at the cost of much of Nagas’ traditional values.
Lauding Naga musicians for coming thus far Pusa said music is one of the areas in Nagas’ cultural life where invasion of gospel music and western pop culture has been the most avid. He said for many years Naga churches were dominated by western choral singing and it was almost taboo to introduce folk singing in the church but with the change in Christian thinking among the younger generation today folk music is making a comeback in the church. “This is a positive trend because our folk music tradition is unique and if we neglect it too long the world is going to lose a beautiful form of musical expression,” he said.
Pus said we Nagas look at their traditional folk songs it was not only about singing and entertainment but it imbibes their oral and cultural history and their literary wealth. He said all folk songs were works of classic traditional poetry and epics of heroism and great love stories being told through this unique art form.
“For so long we kept this light under the basket of popular western music. We must bring it out and let this light shine across the world,” he added.
He also said success of the band Divine Connection and Shillong Chamber Choir have shown that when given the right platform tribal people could also prove to be no less talented than others.
