SSA/RMSA teachers issue: Mixed response to Federations’ call for agitation

The proposed agitation called by the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students' Federation (ENSF) on October 12 against the State government has received a mixed response, with student units supporting the move and a prominent organization ‘requesting’ withdrawal of the same.

The bandh was proposed in response to the government’s inaction in mainstreaming the 2010 and 2013 batches of the SSA/RMSA teachers in the school education cadre. After the meeting between the government and two Federations on October 9 remained inconclusive, they decided to go ahead with the first phase of agitation.

However, the Angami Public Organization on October 9 issued a press statement requesting the NSF and ENSF to call off the bandh.

It stated that the APO in its meeting on Friday had come to the conclusion that bandhs and agitations cannot be allowed right now “as we all are passing through the threat of COVID-19 infection.”

At this crucial juncture we cannot allow any kind of agitation/bandh in the Angami area, it stated.

It also cited that the Naga solution is at our doorstep, in view of which the APO had decided to forward the ‘request’ to call off the agitation.

The APO however supported the demand for regularization of service of the SSA and RMSA Teachers according to the vacancies that arises, and added that it would request the government “not to terminate SSA and RMSA Teachers from the services.”

The APO cautioned that any group calling agitation/bandh forcefully would be considered as a ‘direct challenge’ to its decision.

The All Sumi Students' Union (SKK) in compliance with the directive of the NSF informed that it would impose an indefinite bandh of vehicular movement on government registered vehicles from October 12.

All government vehicles bearing registration of NL-10 and NL-11 plying within the jurisdiction of SKK will be totally restricted, failing which the Union would not be held responsible for any course of action, it stated on Friday. However, administration and police, medical services, fire and emergency services will be exempted from the purview of the bandh, the SKK said.

Joining the protest, the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) informed that it would also enforce total restriction on movement of Nagaland state government vehicles in Mokokchung district with effect from October 12 for an indefinite period or until further notice.

To avoid any untoward incident, all concerned have been directed to comply with the notice and keep the vehicles off road.

AKM added that it would not be held responsible for any unfortunate turn of events. However, in public interest, government vehicles belonging to the district administration and police, medical department and fire and emergency services would be exempted from the purview of this notice, it added.

Responding to the call of the NSF and ENSF, the Chakhesang Students' Union also informed that it would be imposing bandh in its jurisdiction with effect from October 12 until further notice.

The CSU also exempted vehicles on medical duty, administration and Police, fire and emergency services while cautioning all concerned to strictly comply with the notice, “failing which the Union will not be held responsible for any untoward consequences.”

The Rengma Students’ Union has also resolved to impose an indefinite bandh from October 12.

The Union stated that it would totally restrict the movement of government registered vehicles within RSU jurisdiction. However, vehicles on medical services, administration and police on duty, fire and emergency services will be exempted from the purview of the bandh, the Union informed.
