Students perturbed by fall in education standards

Kohima, Feb 24 (MEXN): The Angami Student’s Union has expressed concern over the deteriorating standard and quality of education, particularly in the government funded schools within Kohima district.

ASU memorandum to state Education Minister Imkong Imchen submitted today said that despite the manifested efforts of the government to redefine and reinvent education and its system, the whole programmes and policy remains largely rhetorical and is fast heading towards a dying state.

It also said that the well chalked out plans and strategies for making education value oriented has remain only paper, and illusive, and have fail to achieve the expected impact and result.

“Pertinently, in this regard, it will be very disappointing and disheartening if the present degrading trend continues unabated”, said the Memorandum signed by its president Medo Yokha and general secretary Khrielievi Chusi, while emphasizing on the need to take up drastic and stringent measures to counter the demoralizing trend of education in the state.

The ASU memorandum also carries the five-point charter of demands, which included the demand for immediate redeployment of teachers to their original place of posting with Kohima district; immediate termination of all ghost, unqualified and bogus appointed teachers; to stop entertaining those teachers seeking transfer with post from other districts of the state to Kohima; creation of another DIS in supplement to the existing DIS Kohima and bifurcation of responsibility and to make the teachers mandatory to reside in the school locality which he or she is serving. 

The memorandum while urging the minister to look into the five points charter of demands with promptness, cautioned that the Union will be compel to resort to their own course of actions in the event of the concerned department failure or delay in redressing their demands, so as to protect and promote their members’ interests.

Meanwhile, the Union general secretary Khrielievi said that the Minister has agreed to look into their charter of demands and to initiate necessary actions at earliest. He also said that the Minister has asked the visiting ASU leaders to collect the free text books from the department if there is report of shortage in any school. The ASU while expressed appreciation to the response of the Minister, said that it expect the Minister will bring changes so as to revamp the educational system of the state.
