Thahekhu school looks to new horizons after upgrade

MLA Azheto Zhimomi along with others during the upgradation of government middle school, Thahekhu village in Dimapur on December 8.

Dimapur, December 8 (MExN): After a long wait traversing decades, the government middle school of Thahekhu village in Dimapur today upgraded to two rank more, with class-IX and class-X set to commence from the coming year. To the village the change has evinced great expectations that perhaps the school can now look forward to ‘better results.’
Marking the day, Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (MLA) Azheto Zhimomi inaugurated a new 3-room classroom extension constructed under SSA programme to facilitate the upgrading. Zhimomi, also Advisor to the government’s Sericulture and Co-operation department, said the school was established in 1960 as a Lower Primary School. The school had only 12 students and a teacher then, the MLA said in his short speech. ‘After all these years, we are grateful for the upgrade; education is vital to build society and people; so developing the schools and institutions is vital,’ the legislator said.
Zhimomi appealed to all to strive hard and maintain the integrity and name of the institution. He was of the opinion that the upgrade was an achievement unto itself for a school that was established as far as came into being 51 years ago with one teacher and 12 students only. He said the school has always performed well and has been one of the best managed government schools in the state and its popularity in terms of good academic results has not faltered. ‘The state government will always be there to assist the schools,’ he said.
Also, District Education Officer of Dimapur Kitoli Naje lamented the state of government-run institutions in Nagaland. Government schools usually have “ill pass percent” and very few government schools secure a pass percentage of “20 percent, 30 percent” while private institutions forge ahead every time.
‘Private teachers have facilities but they have no proxy; they are sincere and regular; thus they have very best results,’ she opined.  She urged the school to ‘produce good class ten results’ and be a model for other government schools as well.
During an informal interaction, teacher in-charge of the school Helina Ayemi said the institution has an enrolment of about 816 students and 27 teachers currently. By the coming year, Ayemi said, the school shall have class-IX and class-X. Before the upgrading, the government middle school had sections till class-VIII.
Among those who spoke during the occasion was Director of RMSA Thejao Vihienuo, head GB of Thahekhu village Hukiye Yepthomi, chairman of the village’s education committee Tovihoto Ayemi and secretary of the village’s council Heloto Anche.
