TOAHDCC celebrates senior citizens’ 3rd festival of praise concert

SOVIMA, OCTOBER 12 (MExN): The Tribal Old Age Home cum Day Care Centre (TOAHDCC) celebrated the International Day of Older Persons on Sunday by organising its Senior Citizens’ 3rd Festival of Praise Concert at Lorin Hall, Tetso College, Sovima, under the theme “Revitalize.” Theja Meru, Chairman of TaFMA, Government of Nagaland, was the guest speaker.

The event aimed to promote vitality, balance, and well-being among the elderly, while showcasing their talents through musical performances and fellowship activities.

In his address, Meru emphasised the importance of honouring and supporting elders not only through ceremonial gestures but also through daily care and inclusion. He appealed to the public to assist the elderly and reaffirm collective responsibilities towards them in everyday life. As a token of appreciation, he was presented with a walking staff and an indigenous musical instrument invented by Ivukhu Chisho.

TOAHDCC director Imlitongzuk Amri, in his welcome address, outlined the centre’s plans to establish Nagaland’s first Senior Citizens’ Music Club and a “Jamming Corner” for elders. A documentary on the centre’s journey was also screened, highlighting that it currently shelters elders from diverse backgrounds, including its oldest resident, a 98-year-old woman.

The concert featured performances by senior citizens across age groups. Rev Dirang Lungalang (67) opened with “Shoulders” by For King & Country, followed by a rock rendition of “Canon D.” Tiala (71) performed “Come Spring,” while Rev. Hojevi Kappo sang “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” Ivukhu Chisho presented “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” on his self-invented indigenous instrument. Pastor Tony Johnson, known for his five albums, delivered a soulful performance, and Dr. Watimongla (69) brought nostalgia with her 1980s hit “Sweetest Gift.” Dr. Nicky Kire performed Elvis Presley classics “Help Me” and “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” while Dr. Viketoulie Pienyii (62) rendered “Honesty.” The boy band Old Timers performed “I’ll Meet You in the Morning” and “I’m Going to Hold On to Jesus.”

The programme was hosted by Kilentola Jamir, with an invocation by Rev Mane Phom of Signal Phom Baptist Church. Caregivers, media partners, volunteers, and guests were acknowledged for their participation. The concert concluded with a special performance by the TOAHDCC Family, spanning three generations, singing “When We All Get to Heaven,” followed by a blessing prayer led by Pastor Wabang Longchari of The Lighthouse Church.

Organised as part of the global observance of the International Day of Older Persons, the Festival of Praise highlighted the creativity, energy, and enduring spirit of senior citizens, reinforcing the theme “Revitalize” through music, community, and togetherness.
