Kohima, June 30 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on Tuesday temporarily deferred its proposed agitation after the state government initiated administrative steps for the long-pending construction of a 100-bedded girls’ hostel at Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma.
The decision follows a series of official communications, including a formal directive from the Infrastructure Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) issued on June 29, asking the Directorate of Higher Education and the Project Implementation Committee to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) within the sanctioned Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) allocation and proceed with formalities for construction.
Earlier, the Directorate of Higher Education, through a letter, had conveyed Government's collective decision to retain the available CSR funds for the project, process a fresh proposal before the competent authority, and expedite the necessary administrative procedures for its implementation.
ANCSU had observed a state-wide Black Friday Protest on June 19 to press for the hostel’s construction, which has been pending for several years. The union termed the latest administrative developments a “direct consequence” of the collective democratic pressure exerted by the student community across Nagaland.
“The remarkable unity displayed by the students’ community reaffirmed the collective commitment towards safeguarding the welfare, dignity, and educational interests of female students in Nagaland,” ANCSU President Kivika Yeptho and General Secretary Sotilo Tep said in a statement.
The union extended its gratitude to all associate and affiliated colleges for their solidarity and cooperation.
However, ANCSU made it clear that the agitation has only been “temporarily deferred” in the interest of constructive engagement and expeditious implementation. It warned that it would continue to closely monitor every stage of the project execution.
“Should there be any undue delay, administrative complacency, or deviation from the commitments now formally communicated, ANCSU shall not hesitate to revive and intensify its democratic agitation without further notice,” the union asserted.
It added that the union remains steadfast in ensuring that the hostel project “is no longer confined to official correspondence but is translated into a completed reality” for the student community.
