In a gruesome incident in Dimapur, a goods transporter was found shot dead sending shock waves across the business community and the citizenry. The body of the deceased victim was found on the road outside a warehouse near the IMC Hall early in the morning today. 

The deceased, identified as Jiten Gogoi (in his 30s), hailed from Dhemaji, Assam and was a driver of a transport company. The police suspect that the killing happened sometime between 2:00-2:30 am, September 22. 

He had transported a shipment of sanitary ware and animal feed from Guwahati and was said to have crossed the Dillai checkpost at around 1:46 am, the police added. His dead body was found sprawled on the road near the warehouse at around 5:00-5:30 am. 

As per the police, his truck was found near the entrance to the warehouse and likely two shots were fired. A bullet mark was found on the side door. “His body was found face down on the ground and was likely shot from behind,” said a police official. 

Two empty cases of .22 calibre were recovered by the police from the site. 

While stating that the body was handed over to his family after post-mortem, the police said that investigation was on. 

DCCI, CNCCI, NCD, PAC for prompt justice
The business community in Dimapur has condemned the shooting in the strongest of terms. The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), in a press release, stated that it will not remain a “mute spectator” as the killing has disturbed the peace that has been prevailing. It urged the law enforcing agencies and the district administration to arrest the perpetrators “failing which the business community will close down the transport operation in Dimapur.”

It added that the DCCI stands in solidarity with the family of the deceased victim and “will not rest” till the culprits are arrested and befitting punishment is awarded.

The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) demanded, through a press release, that no stone should be left unturned to arrest the perpetrators. “This incident has smeared the long peace the state has been witnessing and would like to make it clear that gun culture and killings will not be allowed to take over our society again,” it said, while conveying its condolences to the bereaved family. 

On a similar tone, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) stated that the perpetrators must be arrested and befitting punishment awarded and demanded justice for the bereaved family, while ensuring peaceful atmosphere to the denizens of Dimapur.

The Public Action Committee (PAC), Dimapur, while condemning the killing, strongly appealed the district administration “to investigate the matter with all seriousness to book the culprit at the earliest.” It said that Dimapur cannot be turned into a killing ground.
