Tributes, COVID-19 vaccination camp mark Captain Kenguruse’s death anniversary

The 22nd death anniversary of Captain (Late) N Kenguruse was commemorated with laying of wreaths at the War Memorial built in his honour as well as a COVID-19 immunisation camp at his native village Phezha on June 28.

Wreaths were laid to pay respect to the departed war hero, among others, by  Neiselie Kenguruse, father of Late Captain Kenguruse;  Major General VPS Kaushik,  Inspector General  Assam Rifles (North);  Brigadier Vinod Bajiya,  Deputy Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) & Brigadier Abhinav Gurha, Commander, 5 Sector Assam Rifles.

A tree plantation drive was also organised to mark the event and saplings were planted by IGAR (N) Maj Gen Kaushik,  Neiselie, ex servicemen and local villagers. 

Amid the COVID – 19 pandemic, with the objective of service to Humanity, a COVID-19 immunisation camp at was also held at Phezha on the sideline of the event. 

Inaugurated by Late Captain Kenguruse’s father, Assam Rifles personnel led the vaccination drive to cremove the apprehensions amongst locals against the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Essential medicines and COVID relief material were also distributed to the Ex Servicemen and the locals,  informed a press release from PRO, HQ IGAR (N). 

To reach out to the local Ex-Servicemen, a Grievance Cell was established at the location, it said, while a registration drive was also undertaken at the camp to encourage local women for recruitment into Corps of Military Police.

Remembering the brave soul, a eulogy was read out by an officer of the Assam Rifles and it was followed by Prayer and Hymns by the locals, it added.

Late Captain Kenguruse was posthumously awarded MahaVir Chakra for his “unmatched courage and supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy during the Kargil War in 1999, the release further stated. 

He joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in June 1997 and commissioned into the Army Service Corps on December 12, 1998 and was sent on his infantry unit attachment to one of the most renowned battalions of the Indian Army, ‘The 2nd Battalion of Rajputana Rifles,’ it said. 

During the Operation Vijay or the Kargil War, an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May-July 1999 along the line of control (LOC), Late Captain Kenguruse was made Ghatak Platoon commander of the battalion for his “determination and prowess,” it added.

On the night of 28- 29 June 1999 at an area called “Black Rock” in Drass Sector, he heroically led his team and destroy the ‘enemy’s position’ but later succumbed to his injury, the PRO release said. 

For this act of valour, Late Captain Kenguruse was awarded the MahaVir Chakra, posthumously, it added.
