Many government primary schools (GPSs) and middle schools (GMSs) continue to function with poor infrastructure, constraints of faculty and poor facilities. A recent instance highlighted was of Tsurangkong Government high School (under Mokokchung district). Likewise, Tseminyu village’s government middle school which was upgraded in the year 1997 still runs without mathematics and science teachers.
The government primary school in Tseminyu village was established in the year 1956 (it is believed to have been established much earlier but records mention 1956). It was upgraded on the school’s 25th anniversary. Interacting with the faculty members, Head Primary Teacher (locally arranged, primary head teacher) Ysunsenlo Kent expressed sadness over the negligence of the GMS. The absence of mathematics and science teachers is affecting the career of students.
“The ban on creation of post was government’s response on our representations; we have also requested for alternatives, to make an arrangement by transferring those excess teachers at different schools, yet even that is not being done; it is manageable to teach other subjects but as for math and science, it is very difficult to teach”, said Kent.
Under the initiative of the Village Development Board, Kent said, the school managed to function till class VII for five years. This run was done away with, by 2005 following financial constraints. There are a total number of 31 students being put to problems due to the shortage of teachers. The GMS building which lies half a kilometer away from the GPS was finely constructed (1997) and interestingly not even a single class was conducted in that building. The building was abandoned as it was overgrown with thickets.
“Since there are no GMS teachers, we brought the students to GPS building to learn something out of it” a staffer said. Also, villagers found the area of GMS very fertile and so began cultivation instead leaving it to function as an educational institution. The GMS staff said they will shift to the GMS building once they get mathematics and science teachers. Teacher in-charge (locally arranged) Ruben Semp said mathematics and science teachers were arranged privately. However it was stopped following financial constraints. It is reported that among seven government schools in Tseminyu, the government primary school in Tseminyu village is the oldest school in Tseminyu.
