
Dimapur, March 19 (MExN): Despite being featured in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) list of candidates for the biennial election to Rajya Sabha from Nagaland announced on March 18, state Mahila Morcha President S Phangnon Konyak is yet to officially file her nomination with the Returning Officer.
According to updates from the Additional Secretary of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and Returning Officer of biennial election to the Council of States Khruohituonuo Rio, the office has not received any nominations to fill the lone Rajya Sabha seat till 3:00 pm on Tuesday.
The last date of nominations is March 21 and the poll will be held on March 31. Votes will be counted on the same day.
Meanwhile, the PTI News Agency reported that the BJP and its coalition partner—the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), have agreed to nominate Konyak to fill the seat in the Upper House of the Parliament.
As per the PTI report, Chief Minister and NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio said the choice of a woman candidate of the BJP was purely on the party line. “We have an alliance, and the NDPP respects its alliance partner,” the PTI quoted him as saying.
The NDPP and the BJP won 21 and 12 seats respectively in the last state election and formed the government with the support of two Independent MLAs, with the combined strength of 35 MLAs.
