ULB elections will be held as per 74th Amendment of the Constitution: CM

The election to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in accordance with the 74th Amendment of the Constitution was discussed during the Assembly session when member debated on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address on Monday.

Chief Minister Rio said that the election would be conducted as per the decision taken during the consultative meeting on March 9.

Towards this, he informed that steps have been taken up wherein 29 towns have been identified, and that intensive electoral rolls will be taken up and updated before the election. This matter, he informed was also discussed with the state of Manipur, which has no problem with women reservation or some taxations. 

Earlier, MLA Dr Chumben Murry had brought up the matter for debate, suggesting that the upcoming election should be conducted on the formula adopted in 2017, and that any formula for seat reservation should be comprehensive, covering the whole period for which the reservation will be in force. “People are finally receptive for the election and we should not create further problem,” he added.

Murry cautioned the department of Municipal Affairs on the allocation of reserved seats for women.

Terming it as a major achievement by the government, MLA Imtiwapang Aier suggested that extensive tours should be undertaken in all the towns to create awareness before the election to clear the apprehensions and doubts of the people, particularly on taxations.
