Village gates serve not only as vanguard but also as a symbol of authority and identity in the Naga culture, said Minister of Public Health and Engineering (PHE), Jacob Zhimomi. Zhimomi stated this during the inauguration of the Unity village gate, 5th Mile, Chümoukedima on October 1.

He further saluted the pioneers of the village, who began laying the foundation of the village back in 1984, and which was known as Sugar Mill village till it received government recognition in 2014. According to him, he felt fortunate that he, as a representative of the people could play a part in the effort towards the official recognition of the village.

Describing Unity as an informed village, he said that he came across the village as a place populated by intellectuals, who are well aware of the government’s development initiatives.

In the development front overall, he said that Nagaland is a “unique state” in the sense that it has no industry to sustain a self-sufficient economy and as result of which the state is dependent on the Government of India. “But we need to move ahead. Let us have ambition, we have to grow,” he said, while stating that the various development schemes of the Narendra Modi government has much to offer to the state and its youth.

While he claimed it was not an election campaign, he added that he has expectation from the people as much as the people would expect from him as a legislator. If there is going to be an election, I am going to ask for a new mandate. I cannot go to war without ammunition.”

“Many developmental things are in the pipeline… I have asked the Central government through the state government and it is going to be a reality soon. This is not an election campaign. But you must take the right decision. The Narendra Modi government is committed, we cannot miss the bus,” he added. According to him, the government is always ready to help, but the people also have to be accommodative enough to allow for a two-way process which would enable the government and the people to work together.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Unity Village Council, Hetoka Awomi told at the inauguration programme that drainage has been a long felt need of the village.
