Longleng, October 11 (MExN): The Longleng District Administration, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) and Mahila Shakti Kendra observed a week-long celebration of the International Girl Child day on the theme ‘My Voice, Our Equal Future’ from October 7 to 11.
The activities to mark the celebration included pink painting of street walls, super girl costume competition, formation of BBBP volunteers, social work and a closing event on October 11, according to a DIPR report.
As per the report, ten girls each from every ward of Longleng town have been selected as BBBP volunteers in order to promote the BBBP scheme widely. A social work was initiated by the newly formed BBBP volunteers in all the wards in Longleng under the leadership of the youth presidents of the respective wards on October 10, it said.
The volunteers will be assisting in all the activities under BBBP scheme in the district, it added.
During the closing event which coincided with the International Girl Child Day on October 11, Longleng EAC, Ruokuosetuo Tetso spoke on the importance and significance of the day.
Longleng Deputy Commissioner M.Shayung Phom encouraged the gathering to give importance on quality education for both male and female child without discrimination. He took the example of his own family, and said that inclusion of female children in taking major decisions would bring change and success in the family.
SDO (Civil) Longleng Trongdiba Tongpi T Sangtam, inspired the gathering by announcing a commitment to sponsor a girl child’s education in the form of school and tuition fees. He encouraged them to always respect women and girls in every aspect of their lives. Given the opportunity, a girl child can bring a great change in the society in particular and nation at large, he added.
The event was also marked by performances by a female artist called ‘Soul Sister’ and the announcement of results for the ‘Super girl costume competition.’
The report stated that Shamthung Phom of PPC Ward bagged the first position, while Yingli Phom of Shuli Ward and Mungli phom of Nyenching Ward came second and third respectively. The winners were awarded with certificates and cash prizes and consolation prize were also given to all the participants.
