Wokha Town Council launches Swachhata Hi Seva

WOKHA, SEPTEMBER 17 (MExN): The Wokha Town Council (WTC) launched the “Swachhata Hi Seva 2025” programme at the WTC Conference Hall on September 17. The fortnight-long initiative, themed “Swachhotsav”, will run till October 2 with a focus on cleanliness, festivities and building a zero-waste community.

In his address, WTC Chairperson Khozamo Murry stressed the need to begin cleanliness from home. He lauded councillors and staff for their hard work despite limited resources and urged collective effort to keep the town clean and orderly. He cautioned against unauthorised unions disrupting the daily market and called for collective wisdom to safeguard businesses while prioritising public welfare and economic growth.

Sanitation Committee Convenor Chonthungo Lotha said the council is prioritising a plastic-free and hygienic town under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign. The programme will culminate on October 2 with activities including a social work with Mt Tiyi College on September 20, cleanliness drive of target units on September 23, mass social work on September 25 and a medical camp on September 29. He emphasised that sanitation success requires cooperation from all sections of society.

Councillor Zubenthung Jungio highlighted the challenges faced in sanitation, noting that 20–25 years ago Wokha was cleaner despite fewer resources. He said the town now requires six to seven trucks to collect waste thrice a week, with workers often compelled to take double trips. Despite limited funds and meagre pay, he appreciated sanitation workers for their dedication and urged councillors and staff to work in coordination to create a healthier environment.

Additional Deputy Commissioner and Executive Officer of WTC, Renbomo Ezung, pointed out the lack of proper waste disposal and management facilities in Wokha. Stressing that cleanliness is a collective responsibility, he urged community participation and cited Japan’s approach to cleanliness as an example.

He suggested recognising sanitation workers for their dedication, transforming the WTC dumping site, and finding early solutions to emerging unauthorised unions affecting vendors and businesses.
