Dimapur, March 15 (MExN): Over the week, District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) organized various programmes and activities in their respective districts in commemoration of the World Consumer Rights Day.
In Longleng, the programme was held at Yongshei village under the theme ‘The Sustainable Consumer.’ The programme was chaired by C Imlichuba, PLV, and welcome address was delivered by Hauchai Phom, Chairman Village Council.
According to a press release from the NSLSA, P Monyei Phom, Panel Lawyer, spoke on rights of consumer; A Mane Phom, Retainer Lawyer, spoke on RTI Act; Chingmei Phom spoke on Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen; Hamnyei Angh spoke on Motor Vehicle Act and Ajongba Imchen, CJM/Secretary LDLSA, spoke on Victim Compensation, Right to Education and also on Nagaland Village Council Act.
Altogether around 180 participants participated in the programme.
Wokha DLSA observed the event at Libemo Memorial School, Wokha on March 13. Demonstration on Right to Safety, Right to Choose, Right to be Heard, Right to be informed about the Quality, Quantity, Potency, Purity, Standard, Price and Right to Seek Redressal against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of Consumers was conducted while creating awareness on Rights Of Consumers, the press release informed.
Advocate Shanchobeni P Lotha, Project Assistant, Para Legal Volunteers Zuchanbeni Ezung, Mhajamo Khuvung and Daisy Tungoe participated in the programme. Sorojit Josiah Mitra, Principal, Libemo Memorial School, Wokha delivered welcome address and vote of thanks was proposed by Joseph Ezung.
Zunheboto DLSA observed the event with ENPO Zunheboto at Eastern Nagaland Baptist Fellowship Zunheboto. Easter H Yepthomi, Retainer lawyer, highlighted the significance of the event, Imti Chingmak Chang, General Secretary, ENBF, delivered the welcome address, while resource person Alovini Yeptho Centre Administrator, Sakhi-OSC spoke on consumer rights.
Peren DLSA observed World Consumer Rights Day at Athibung town with stakeholders and Athibung town council members, the press release stated. The programme was chaired by Indeu, Panel Lawyer. Asungbe, Retainer lawyer, PDLSA, highlighted on the event’s significance while Panel Lawyer Inchang spoke on Consumer Protection Act and exhorted the gathering to know their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
Meanwhile, Kohima DLSA on March 15 observed World Consumer Rights Day by conducting Door to Door Campaign at New Secretariat Area along with 9 Panel Lawyers. Pamphlets on various topics on Consumer Rights, Domestic Violence, Constitutional Provisions for Woman and Legal Aid and Legal Services were distributed to the public by briefing about the importance of each and every topic. Altogether around 300 people were benefitted through the campaign, the NSLSA press release stated.
Immanuel Baptist Church
Immanuel Baptist Church, Kohima and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) also observed World Consumer Rights Day as part of its Sunday morning worship service. NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi issued a press statement on the event.
Savi, who was the speaker for the programme, highlighted the rights and duties of a consumer based on this year’s theme – ‘The Sustainable Consumer’. Savi briefed the church members about the Food Safety and Standard Act and urged them to be aware of citizens’ entitlement under the National Food Security Act. Further, he exhorted the congregation to build awareness and stop “unscrupulous people to play with genuine citizen entitlement in a form of black-marketing.” The State Government is yet to set up State Food Commission, he added.
Tuensang
World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated on Sunday at Holy Angels School, Tuensang, under the theme ‘The Sustainable Consumer.’ The event was organized by the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Tuensang.
On the occasion, C Chullen Chang, Assistant Controller, LM&CP, narrated the history of World Consumer Rights Day and elaborated on the importance of observing the day.
Chang also explained how the department of LM&CP has been the nodal department of consumer protection in the state and said that he had chosen to conduct this event with the students of the school with a vision to impart knowledge about consumer rights to young people.
Antimangyang, Retainer Lawyer, TDLSA, spoke on the theme and explained in detail about the rights of consumers, how to avail the help of a court, duties of a consumer while making purchases etc.
According to a press release, Er Yemjong, Inspector, LM&CP chaired the programme while Principal of the school VJ Jose gave the welcome speech.
Other highlights of the programme were vote of thanks from Soteth, Project Assistant, TDLSA and a special number from Angels Consumer Club.
