WSH put on hold decision to remove ‘war gates’

Dimapur, July 26 (MExN): The Western Sumi Hoho today said it has decided to “keep in abeyance” its earlier decision to remove what is being called “war gates” in Beisumpuikam village, Peren district. Representative of government of Nagaland held a consultative meeting with the Western Sumi Hoho in Chekiye village on July 26 to discuss issues relating to the WSH’s decision to remove “war gate” at Beisumpuikam village on or before July 27, 2011 after the government failed to act upon the 15 days ultimatum served to the government by the Hoho.
“During the meeting, Shri. Azheto Zhimomi, MLA & Advisor, Sericulture and Cooperation, who represented government of Nagaland, asked the hoho to withdraw its resolution to remove the war gates at Beisumpuikam village on or before July 27, 2011, assuring that the government would initiate action to remove the gates,” the WSH stated. WSH president LK Achumi and general secretary Vikato Shikhu appended the note. “Therefore keeping in view the assurance of the government, the Western Sumi Hoho has unanimously agreed to keep in abeyance its decision to remove the gates for an indefinite period of time,” the hoho said.

Beisumpuikam reacts to WSH
Beisumpuikam Village Council has vehemently opposed what it called the ‘defamatory remarks’ made by the WSH on the village’s gate and expressed concern at the proposed march of the Sema tribesmen to demolish the village gate on July 27.
“Such moves can only inflate rivalry and create hostile conditions and will pose a treat to sovereignty of Naga village system. We are hopeful that government will uphold the sanctity of our recognized village,” the village council said in a note today. GB of the village Sinlak Zeliang and secretary Lungyibuing appended the note.
The WSH must accept the reality that Beisumpuikam is a recognized village and should not try to compare it with “Inavi encroachers” and that “Ntangki is not in Zunheboto,” the council reminded. ‘It is in Peren district and WSH has no right to interfere in the Zeliangrong areas. WSH should take note of the fact that government of Nagaland has conferred only Beisumpuikam with the rights to protect the Ntangki National Park from all illegal activities and encroachments,” the council said.
The village demanded that all the accused in the “28 May shooting” on the Beishumpui, villagers should be arrested. “We have tolerance and peaceful attitude: it should not be taken for granted. Repute of the intellectual Semas who have a standing and respect in the Naga Society should not be put to stake in the hasty decisions to justify the illegal activities of a handful man,” the council stated.
Advising against any dispute or confusion on the village’s gate, the council reminded that the structure is a sentinel practiced in Naga customs in Beisumpuikam.
“As a part of the Naga fraternity, WSH should have been courteous to show respect to the customs. Also, we request all concerned to keep restraining in the manner in which they address Beisumpuikam villagers, as it will amount to insulting the whole Zeliangrongs. We are spell bound to protect and safeguard Ntangki National Park at any cost.”
