Independent MLA T Yangseo Sangtam has been elected unopposed to the office of Deputy Speaker of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA).
Speaker Sharingain Longkumer today declared that the first-time MLA was elected “unopposed and unanimous” on the first day of the 11th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly here in Kohima.
Longkumer extended best wishes to Yangseo, stating that he would look forward to working together for the betterment and decorum of the House. Yangseo’s candidature was proposed by MLA KT Sukhalu and seconded by MLA H Haiying.
T Yangseo Sangtam won the 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency as an independent candidate in the bye-election held in November last year.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio assured wholehearted cooperation to Yangseo in the discharging of his duties. He said that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker play very important roles in functioning of parliamentary democracy.
Also expressing confidence in Yangseo’s capability, NPF Legislature Party leader TR Zeliang extended full cooperation and best wishes to him in discharging his duty by occupying the neutral chair.
Meanwhile, Yangseo thanked all the members of the House for having elected him unopposed to the most dignified post of Deputy Speaker while appealing for their cooperation.
Earlier, motion of thanks on the Governor’s address, (Delivered today in the House by Nagaland’s Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi), was moved by MLA H Haying and seconded by MLA Keneizhakho Nakhro.
NLA speaker Sharingain Longkumer made obituary reference to the passing away of Dr Kakheto Zhimomi, former MLA in February 2022. The House observed a minute silence in respect of the departed soul. The assembly session will resume on March 21.
