“Yim Meimer” the 8-Day Rural Camp

Dimapur, April 24 (MExN): As part of MSW (Master of Social Work) curriculum, a seven days rural camp was organized by the 2nd Semester students of MGCSW from April 14 to 21 at Salulamang village in Mokokchung district. The theme of the camp was “YIM MEIMER” (Lover of the village) and the slogan was “…to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield”.
As part of the camp, various programs were conducted in the village, which included agriculture education program in collaboration with Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) on topics like poultry, rubber plantation, piggery and squash making,  Self Help Group (SHG) training program, family day with Rev Yanger PRO, Clark Theological College as the resource person,  Information Technology (IT) program in collaboration with Regional Institute of e-Learning & Information Technology (RIeLIT); legal literacy program for sensitizing the community on protection of women from domestic violence and child rights; household survey, life skill education program for primary school children, social service in school, trekking to Dikhu River, sports & cultural activities and focused group discussions, informed a press note issued by Anjali Shanmukhan, In-Charge, Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Social Work,  Chuchuyimlang, Nagaland.
The note also stated that the rural camp is an integral part of the practice learning for social work profession. It provides students an exposure to the rural life, problems and issues and enables them to plan, organize and implement relevant program. It also helps students to evolve a pattern of participation and facilitate reflective and analytical learning. It may be mentioned here that MGCSW, the first ever centre of social work in Nagaland, was established in August 2010 as a constituent Centre of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education and Development (MGIED) which is being initiated under IGNOU-Nagaland Gandhi Ashram Education Complex. The centre of social work is the first academic and professional program of MGIED, with special focus on North East region having the trust area of social justice, peace and sustainable development.
The students and faculty of MGCSW thank the faculty members; the village council, the pastor, youth department and the community members of Salulamang village, Resource persons from ATMA, RIeLIT, CTC and all the supporters who have made the rural camp a successful endeavor. The seven days rural camp was an enriching experience for the students, where they gained an insight into practical aspects of rural life and thereby enhancing professional competencies in addressing the social realities and concerns, the note said.
