Dimapur, August 16 (MExN): The Kyong Hoho has clamped an indefinite bandh from August 17 beginning from 6:00 AM on the Wokha- Merapani road following a reported murder that led to tensions between the Kyong community and other no-Naga communities at the border.
Border tensions after murder; assault on Naga youths
An emergency meeting of the Kyong Hoho and other frontal organizations namely the Kyong Students’ Union, Kyong Eloe Hoho and the Wokha District GBs Association was held on August 16 in the Lotha tribal hall Wokha. The meeting discussed the August 14 murder incident in the Lakhuti areas and physical assault on nine Naga boys by a group of people at Merapani (Nagaland). The organizations strongly condemned the August 14 incident where a ‘non-local’ was murdered by unknown person (s). The organizations have demanded that the law enforcing agencies capture the culprits at the earliest and take necessary action as per the law.
The ‘hoho’ also appealed to the public of Assam and Nagaland to cooperate with the investigating agencies and not to hinder the process of investigation.
A statement from the ‘hoho’ informed today – “It is revealed that a group of people gathered at Merapani and started harassing innocent Lotha/Naga people falsely accusing them of the murder. This cowardly act is totally unfounded and unjustified. It is very unfortunate to mention that nine Lotha Naga boys employed at private companies at Chennai who were returning home for holiday were waylaid by the irate group and physically assaulted them near CRPF gate at Merapani on 15th August, 2011. Further the irate group crossed the CRPF gate, entered Merapani (Foot-Hill) Nagaland and damaged properties and vehicles amounting to lakhs of rupees.”
The organizations have decided to go for an “indefinite peaceful bandh” from August 17 beginning from 6:00 AM along the Wokha- Merapani road. “No vehicular movement will be allowed to ply and business transaction will be strictly restricted till normalcy of the situation is restored. Where administration, police, paramilitary, medical services will be exempted from the preview of the bandh.”
The ‘hoho’ said the matter here is to the public to understand that it is purely a law and order issue and not a border issue. “Hence indefinite peaceful bandh is called. No individual is allowed to take advantage and take the law in their own hand during the bandh. If such case is reported the responsibility will be fixed to the individual or group involved,” the ‘hoho’ stated.
The organizations also warned all business establishments under Wokha district not to hike the price of all essential commodities during the bandh.
