A one day orientation-cum-exhibition on Allied Health Sciences (AHS) programmes for the high-school and higher secondary school students (science stream) was organised at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), Dimapur on November 12.
The exhibition featured face to face interaction with the course organisers, latest 3D cardiac imagining tools and food stalls.
Altogether, 500 students from 15 different schools under Dimapur participated in the event according to the medical official.
Speaking with Dr Paul Ravindran, Principal of Allied Health Science Services (Northeast Regional Multi-disciplinary Paramedical Institute), he stated that the main aim of the event was to create awareness amongst the school going students on the available AHS professional courses. In total, 10 different stalls were set up showcasing 10 allied health science courses such as, Health Information Management, Cardiology, Rehabilitation Science etc.
He added that students were shown demonstrations of different models of the human body, equipments used during examination apart from the career counselling session with the experts on the field.
“It is to show the students hands-on-experiences on what they would use in a hospital and to let them choose the right profession,” he noted.
Dr Ravindran mentioned that compared to the other professional courses such as Engineering, Law and Business, most people in the state were not aware of the numerous courses provided in AHS. “These courses also provide good paying jobs for the students however they have to make the informed choices themselves,” he said.
In addition, Dr Ravindran highlighted the AHS courses current available at CIHSR, BSc in Anesthesiology and Operation Theatre, Bsc in Health Information Management and BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology. “We are also trying to add two more courses in BSc Physiotherapy and BSc Radiotherapy Technology,” he stated.
If the students wished to study outside the state, CIHSR has also tied up with the Emmanuel Hospital Association to sponsor students from the NE region to study at Christian Medical College, Vellore, he said.
“This is the first time we are organising such an event and so far it looks successful,” he opined. As CIHSR hopes to introduce more bachelor courses in the near future so we need to have a lot more awareness and we will definitely try to host such exhibitions next year as well, Dr Ravindran said in conclusion.
