Dimapur, August 29 (MExN): Amused at the Naga People’s Front’s (NPF) statements of welcome for the Lokpal bill and the recent resolution in Parliament supporting Anna Hazare’s three demands, the Nagaland Congress today dared the ruling party to float an anti-corruption ombudsman for Nagaland if at all the NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) is serious like it projects itself to be. The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) practically sneered at “holier than thou” statements of the NPF’s in the backdrop of India’s latest attempt at creating an anti-corruption apparatus.
“Who is not aware of Anna Hazare’s campaign for Jan Lok Pal Bill for a corruption free India? It is amusing when the NPF press bureau posed itself as “Holier than Thou Art” on all issues as if others are blind. If the NPF government is serious in welcoming the bill, let it pass a resolution in the coming session of the assembly for appointment of the state’s own Lokayukta (Ombudsman),” the NPCC stated in a publicity cell release.
Else, the Congress reminded, the NPF’s “applause” for Anna Hazare holds no water. “It will be just another eye-wash by the corrupt NPF government.”
The opposition Congress took to task the NPF and the DAN government, both currently the focus of a good number of corruption charges for some time now. “As usual the NPF press bureau had reacted for the sake of reacting without facts and figures. Whether the NPCC’s allegations on deplorable road conditions was true or not could be judged from the press statements of the public including one of NPF’s own president of Wozuro range (Wokha),” the Congress said.
“The issue in question was on deplorable road conditions and not on others. The NPCC had questioned as to where the massive road funds sanctioned for maintenance and repair/renovation had dissipated as to leave our roads in such dilapidated conditions.”
The opposition also challenged the NPF to answer why there would be a reason for the NPCC to “malign the NPF government” when the reality of deplorable roads is there for every one to see. “It can’t fool the public with bombastic press statements because vehicles are going to ply on roads and not on newspapers,” the NPCC remarked.
On the contention of the NPF referring to ‘personal account’ of the Congress Legislature Party leader’s “achievements” when he was a DAN cabinet minister, the NPCC said the CLP leader’s account “turned out to be figures on NPF government’s outstanding loan status that has no connection with the present issue. The NPF Press Bureau should not try to divert the issue and mislead the public.”
The Congress reminded that “whether it is a multi-crore or mini-crore scam”, corruption remains corruption. “Was the NPF press bureau trying to justify the acts of corruption by its Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries by quoting the multi-crore scams in the Centre? Did it mean there’s nothing wrong for its ministers and parliamentary secretaries to be corrupt just because some members in the UPA government are corrupt?”
