Cricket practice pitch inaugurated at PCC

CHÜMOUKEDIMA, OCTOBER 3 (MExN): Patkai Christian College (PCC), in collaboration with the Chümoukedima District Cricket Association, inaugurated a new cricket practice pitch at the PCC ground on October 3 at 10:00 am.

The programme began with Wetshete Thopi, Dean of Students, PCC, as the chairperson. He highlighted the importance of nurturing youth talents to build discipline and teamwork, while also helping students pursue their cricketing aspirations.

On behalf of the college administration, Dr Thepfuvilie Pieru, Principal of PCC, delivered a speech underlining the role of sports in education. He said that the college considers games and sports an integral part of education. While acknowledging that Patkai is one of the oldest private colleges in Nagaland and celebrated its Golden Jubilee last year, he noted that as a private institution it still lacks adequate facilities, particularly in sports.

“While we have the space, we did not have proper facilities to support our students. With the establishment of this cricket practice pitch, we aim to encourage and inspire students to pursue cricket alongside their academic,” he stated.

Dr Pieru further remarked that cricket is the most popular sport in India and has become part of the country’s culture. He expressed hope that the facility would help students realise their potential and that some may go on to become professional cricketers.

The special guest, Watinuksung Jamir, Joint Secretary of the Nagaland Cricket Association, also addressed the gathering. He encouraged the students by stressing that cricket unites communities, inspires young players, and instills values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

“I urge the youth to take full advantage of this opportunity and work hard to fulfill their dreams,” he said. He credited leaders who had a vision to develop cricket in the state, noting that chief minister Neiphiu Rio has been the guiding force in setting up cricket infrastructure. He added that under the presidentship of Rio, the Nagaland Cricket Association is striving to ensure the entire state benefits.

The programme concluded with a closing prayer by Rev. Dr Vichükho Ngukha, Chaplain of PCC, followed by the official inauguration of the cricket practice pitch by the special guest.
