Dimapur, January 24 (MExN): A high-level meeting was convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall in Dimapur to deliberate on strategies for alleviating the city’s growing urban traffic congestion.
Chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. J. Alam, IAS, the meeting brought together officials from the District Administration, Commissioner of Police, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), urban planners, and representatives from various departments to devise sustainable solutions for the city’s mobility challenges.
The participants highlighted key issues contributing to traffic congestion, including the rapid urban expansion, inadequate road infrastructure, and the lack of efficient traffic management systems. Chief Secretary Alam underscored the critical nature of the problem, stating, “Traffic congestion has become a critical issue in Dimapur, requiring innovative solutions and a coordinated approach among all departments to establish a sustainable urban transport system.”
During the meeting, stakeholders analysed existing traffic bottlenecks and explored long-term solutions to improve urban mobility. Among the recommendations were:
Widening of key roads: Identifying and expanding congested routes to accommodate the growing volume of vehicles.
Creating alternate routes: Developing bypasses and feeder roads to divert traffic from high-density areas.
Enforcing strict parking regulations: Implementing no-parking zones and designating specific areas for vehicle parking to minimize road obstructions.
Enhancing public transport: Exploring improved public transport systems to reduce dependency on private vehicles.
Smart traffic systems: Introducing intelligent traffic management solutions, including synchronized traffic signals and automated systems for real-time traffic monitoring.
NHIDCL presented a detailed review of ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects, offering insights into potential solutions for Dimapur’s traffic challenges. The discussion also included the need for a comprehensive traffic management study to guide future urban planning and infrastructure development.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to prioritize practical measures for immediate implementation, aiming to provide Dimapur residents with a smoother and more efficient commuting experience. Emphasis was placed on balancing urban growth with environmental sustainability.
Following the meeting, Chief Secretary Alam, accompanied by officials from the District Administration, Commissioner of Police, urban planners, and NHIDCL representatives, inspected the proposed Dimapur bypass to Kohima near the New Field Check Gate. The inspection aimed to assess the feasibility of the bypass as a long-term solution for easing traffic congestion in the city.
