In an incident with potential to open old wounds in the history of Naga-Kuki relations, militants, reportedly Kuki, have abducted Ukhrul’s Executive Engineer (EE) from his office quarter at Litan, Ukhrul district during the midnight of August 21. The whereabouts of EE Wungshim Kasar, of Sarkaphung village, is not known.
The wife of the abducted officer Yaoreila Kasar narrated the incident to media persons at her residence today evening. She said four armed Kuki militants in full army fatigues came to their residence at around 12:00 and called for “aunty.” The family was afraid to open the door but the armed militants broke the door open and came inside brandishing their guns. The intruders ordered the officer to come out of the house.
The officer is said to have told the militants that he would render any help they want but the militants told them to be quiet and then proceeded to force him out. The militants also took away the family’s SBBL gun and wife away along with the husband and later kept them in the Mongkot Chephu up-hill church. The armed men later released her on some conditions after the wife fainted.
The wife was threatened by the gunmen not to inform anyone or go to the police if she wanted her husband alive. The wife had a telephonic talk with the extremists.
The husband and wife were also allowed to talk but only in common Manipuri language (Meiteilon) for a short moment, the wife of the abducted officer said.
Family sources also disclosed that at present Wungshim Kasar is working in the Public Work Department as Surveyor of Works posted in Imphal.
The Mapithal range comprising of more than 20 villagers have formed a Joint Action Committee comprising the Tangkhul Aze Long (Tangkhul South Council) and the Aze Katamnao Long (South Students’ Union). The organization have strongly condemned the abduction of an innocent officer, said Shimthar Jajo and J. Mayarmi the presidents of South Students’ Union and South Council. They have strongly appealed to the abductors to safely release the Officer unharmed.
