
Dimapur, August 9 (MExN): Nagaland’s state Cabinet led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially met Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi this evening and presented to him the stance of Nagaland Government concerning the demand for a separate state raised by an organization representing the eastern regions of the state. The Eastern Naga People’s Organization’s (ENPO) is demanding creation of a separate state out of Nagaland.
Neiphiu Rio was accompanied by other Cabinet leaders in meeting the Home Minister, at 5:40 pm for about 45 minutes, the government informed. The Cabinet ministers who accompanied the chief minister were TR Zeliang, Imkong L Imchen, Nyeiwang Konyak, Kaito Aye, MC Konyak, P Longon, Kuzholuzo, Dosheshe, Dr. Chumben Murry and Dr. Ngangshi K Ao.
“The Cabinet team apprised the Union Home Minister about various current issues facing Nagaland today, such as the demand by the ENPO for a separate state, and the stand of the state government on the issue, including the proposal of the state government for granting autonomous council for the ENPO areas…” chief secretary of Nagaland Lalthara informed today in an official communiqué.
Among other things, the Cabinet also highlighted the Intangki forest land issue, “other law and order issues” and problems associated with ceasefire ground rules, especially in the context of the recent split in the NSCN (K), the government said.
According to the government, the state Cabinet team apprised the Union Home Minister about the various steps being taken by the Nagaland government to address the grievances of the people of “eastern Nagaland.” This included constitution of high level official committees headed by the chief secretary and the constitution of five Cabinet sub-committees to study the issue. Most of the committees have already submitted their findings and recommendations to the Cabinet, the communiqué said.
The Union Home Minister aired his views on the stated matter, and how the government may address the problem of ‘less development’ in “eastern Nagaland”, including his willingness to extend all possible help and financial assistance for the purpose.
Further, the Cabinet apprised the Union Home Minister of the need for setting up a central medical institution in Nagaland as well as a Central Regional Police Training Institute at Razaphema, the need for construction of a battalion headquarter for Nagaland Police battalions, and the need for early reimbursement of security-related expenditures.
