Kohima | August 10 : The agitation called by Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) ended peacefully for the day in all the four eastern districts, according to reports from the organization this evening. The ENSF is pressing for fulfillment of five demands. Among others, the demands include all newly-created teachers’ posts under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to be given to “eastern Nagaland”, all vacancies arising within the “eastern Nagaland” be filled by inhabitants of six “eastern” tribes.
Speaking to this correspondent, vice president of ENSF Likhumse Sangtam said the federation received an email from the chief secretary of Nagaland stating that the chief minister and his colleagues were in Delhi and that the demands would be discussed upon their return. The agitation was thus called off.
Not satisfied with the response, the student leader termed the email “ridiculous”, and said the organization has had enough of verbal and written assurances that never fulfill. The ENSF leader reiterated that till the five demands are met, agitations would continue and there would be no negotiation or meetings. “If they come in Tuensang, we will discuss” he said.
Sangtam said “cabinet minister approved relaxation policy on 2009, 9 January, pertaining to teachers recruitment that will be given to our people. At the same time all the vacancies arising in eastern Nagaland shall be filled by eastern people but has not been implemented so far”. Also, president of the Konyak Students’ Union Methna said the agitation will be intensified in the following days.
He said the request of the chief secretary was turned down as ample time had already been given to the government to resolve the matter. The reason that the ministers are in Delhi should not be the “excuse,” Methna stated.
It is also reported that more than 1,000 students’ volunteers turned up and took out a silent protest in front of DEO/DIS offices today in Mon, Kiphire, Longleng and Tuensang district. The federation is all set to launch its second phase of agitation by picketing DEO and DIS office tomorrow in all the four districts including sub division, Shamator and Noklak

Students’ units under the Eastern Naga Students Federation (ENSF) today started their phase-wise agitations over the recent retention and regularization of government teachers under the SSA Nagaland. The agitations seeks to protest what the ENSF states is the failure of the government and department to fulfill the five demands submitted to the director of School Education on July 26, 2011.
Commenting at the response of the government, vice President of ENSF Likhumse said ‘we have lost confidence in government because over the years, books and books of assurance and commitments have been given but so far nothing has materialized and is lying only in paper.’ ‘So far the government have been cheating us on various issue so this time if the government wants to discuss the issue with us, they will have to come to ENSF HQ Tuensang, if not we will not discuss at all’ he asserted.
Likhumse said that on February 18, 2011 a meeting with the government was held but so far nothing has been done because of which the ‘five point charter of demand’ was forwarded to the director of School Education on July 26 2011.
He also added, four district and two sub division under ENSF jurisdiction are taking part, and after the three phase of agitation which starts today if the government does not show any response we will decide as to what course of action we will take if our demand is not fulfilled. Also taking part in the agitation in Kiphire, Sangtam students’ president Likhumba commented that ‘if my people do not get opportunity even in the district level where is justice’. ‘We will go on with the agitation till our demand is fulfilled. He claimed to be fighting “for what is due to us”.
