Dimapur, August 21 (MExN): The business community of Dimapur is growing wearier at the extortion and illegal “tax” activities in the state’s commercial center and has asked the “underground organizations” to rein in their cadres.
The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and the Frontal Business Organization met on August 20 and deliberated on the chronic extortion activities in Dimapur.
The two organizations unanimously asked the various Naga underground organizations to check the rampant illegal collections “by its cadres for personal benefit in the name of their respective organizations.” A statement highlighting the decisions taken during the meeting was received here from the DCCI.
The two organizations also strongly asked the undergrounds to instate a “strong system of checks and balances” to ensure that the “collectors” refrain from collecting the same “taxes” over and again.
“With the coming of the festive season, the DCCI also resolved to appeal to the various organizations to check members of their rank and file who collect donations in their own individual capacity thereby causing undue harassment to the business community,” the DCCI stated.
Unscrupulous elements further capitalize on such instances and this in turn causes more harassment to the business community, the business representatives said. The Naga undergrounds are urged to take “preventive measures during work assignment.”
The DCCI and FBO also cautioned businessmen to check the antecedents of their employees to check unscrupulous individuals who connive with anti-social elements and engage in criminal activities, extort or kidnap and even murder members of the business community.
The organizations have decided to meet once in 3 months. “Any member who fails to attend such meetings for three consecutive times without valid reasons, may be summarily removed from the executive body without further notice,” the DCCI press release stated.
The business organizations further lauded the Dimapur Police, Dimapur district administration and the law enforcing agencies “for their strong clampdown on anti-social activities particularly extortion and illegal collections.”
The DCCI is encouraged by their sincerity and tireless efforts to maintain law and order in Dimapur, the press release said. “We reiterate our earlier stand to extend fullest cooperation and support to the law enforcing agencies in this regard,” the DCCI added. The press release was appended by DCCI president Hokivi Chishi.
