Mokokchung, March 26 (MExN): The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, organised a one-day workshop on single-use plastic and a cleanliness drive at the college auditorium on March 25.
The programme was conducted under the Swachhata Action Plan (SAP) and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Around 200 NSS student volunteers participated.
Imkongkumzuk, NSS volunteer, chaired the session, while L S Vinod Kumar, Vice Principal of the college, delivered the welcome address. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr L Imlinichet Imchen, Programme Officer, NSS.
The technical session had two segments. In the first, L H Thangi Mannen, retired Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland and convenor, Earth Alliance Nagaland, spoke on “From Pollution to Solution: Rethinking Plastic Use”.
She highlighted the alarming rise in waste generation and said landfills are not a sustainable solution. Emphasising collective responsibility, she called for awareness, reduced consumption, segregation, proper disposal, establishment of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and support for sustainable policies.
She also outlined the new Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, effective April 1, which mandate four-stream segregation—wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste—and stress decentralised waste management with stricter penalties under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
In the second segment, Dr Temjensangla Pongener, coordinator, Earth Alliance Mokokchung, spoke on “Single Use Plastic: Bridging Awareness and Action”.
She said zero waste does not mean no waste but minimising waste through conscious choices, and stressed five pillars—rethinking consumption, reducing use, reusing materials, recycling responsibly and composting organic waste.
