From Pledges to Plantations: Nagaland marks Environment Day

Dimapur, June 5 (MExN): Schools, colleges and community organizations across Nagaland marked World Environment Day 2026 through tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, and environmental awareness programmes.

Phom Lempong Higher Secondary School (PLHSS), Longleng, marked World Environment Day. The speaker was N Tialemba Phom, environmentalist and Executive Secretary of the Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA), who has led the planting of over one lakh trees across Longleng district in the past eight years. Principal Philip Nyam distributed saplings to nearly 800 students, urging each to plant a tree at home as a personal commitment to protecting and preserving the environment.

Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.

 

At Pranab Vidyapith Hr Sec School, Dimapur, senior students participated in an essay competition, while juniors engaged in placard and poster making, along with a plantation drive. Teachers underscored the significance of World Environment Day and its vital importance to human existence.

College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry.

 

College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Jalukie, observed World Environment Day 2026 and the Khet Bachao Abhiyan with a plantation drive on campus and an awareness campaign at New Peren Village. Dean Dr I Shakuntala, along with faculty, staff, and students, planted a variety of native tree saplings. At New Jalukie Village, an awareness session on Khet Bachao Abhiyan was held, where the Dean emphasized environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and the role of individuals in mitigating climate change.

Dimapur Government College.

 

Dimapur Government College organised a tree plantation drive at its new campus. Principal Dr T Tiakaba Jamir, Vice Principal Diethoseu Mepfhufo, ANO Lt. Watisenla, and 36 NCC cadets participated. Twenty-two Pencil Pine trees (Cupressus sempervirens), donated by the Principal’s office, along with several ornamental saplings, were planted across the campus.

Immanuel College.

 

Eco Club of Immanuel College, in collaboration with Cambridge School, Lengrijan, Dimapur, organised a plantation drive around the Cambridge School campus. The saplings were provided by the Forest Department, Government of Nagaland.

Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama,

 

Eco Club of Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama, marked the occasion with a prayer, cultural performances, keynote speeches, a sustainable fashion show, and cleanliness drives. The keynote address was delivered by Letso Mekro, environmentalist, SASU advisor, and owner of Nagmi Bonsai. NCC cadets cleaned Jakhama village, while the Eco Club cleaned the highway between Kigwema and Jakhama, joined by local residents. Senior students also planted saplings on campus.

Eden Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.

 

Eden Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, organised a cleanliness drive on its campus, with Eco Club members and teacher in-charges participating. To promote environmental awareness, students of Classes V to XII took part in painting, essay, poster, and slogan writing competitions. A formal programme in the school chapel hall featured speeches, a pledge-taking ceremony, and a video presentation on nature-based climate solutions. In total, 197 students and 24 staff members took the pledge, reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection.

Green Succession of Nagaland.

 

Green Successions of Nagaland State (Green SONS) organised an awareness campaign at Government Higher Secondary School, Lengrijan, Dimapur, in collaboration with the Wildlife Division, Dimapur; Nagaland NGOs Forum (NNF); NESSR; and the school’s Eco Club. Keynote speaker Dr Jess T Murry, Chairman, Green SONS and Dr Ahoto Andrew, President, NNF emphasised the importance of tree planting and urged the gathering to remain conscious of environmental issues and their effects. A plantation drive followed, with around 50 saplings planted in and around the school.

Government High School Bayavü.

 

Government High School (GHS) Bayavü, in collaboration with the Directorate of Census Operations, Kohima, celebrated World Environment Day under the theme ‘Climate Change.’ The programme began with an environmental pledge led by teacher Kikruneinuo Liezietsu. Kenei Miachieo, Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, gave an exhortation and demonstrated proper sapling planting and care. Headmaster Vedusa urged students to take personal responsibility for protecting the ecosystem and to spread environmental awareness in their communities. Officials, students and staff then conducted a plantation drive around the school compound, dug a compost pit, and cleaned the kitchen garden. A poster-making competition was also held. Bupenmongko (Class 10) secured first place, while Lovito (Class 8) and Lumyimkhiung (Class 9) were adjudged second and third, respectively.

Joint Council Forum, Dimapur.

 

Joint Council Forum, Dimapur under ward 21 comprising NST Colony, Churches Colony and Middle Point organised a plantation drive to enhance green cover, promote environmental awareness, and foster collective responsibility for nature. The Forum acknowledges Jonah D Achumi, Chairman of Middle Point, for providing the saplings.

Kohima College

 

Kohima College joined the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (#Plant4Mother)” campaign at its new campus. A total of 25 students and 14 faculty members, including Principal Dr Vitsosie Vupru and IQAC Convenor Dr Ketoukhrie-ü, participated. One hundred saplings—cherry, guava, and wild apple—provided by the Forest Department, were planted. The drive was jointly coordinated by the Friends of Nature Club, Department of Environmental Science, NSS, NCC, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

NPF Pughoboto Division.

 

Naga People’s Front (NPF) Pughoboto Division, in collaboration with the Pughoboto Sub-Divisional Administration and the Department of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Nagaland, organized a mass tree plantation drive. Fruit-bearing and other tree saplings were planted around office compounds and along roadside stretches. Party leaders, members, volunteers and officials participated. Y. Vikheho Swu, President of the NPF Central Farmers’ Wing, addressed the gathering. Deputy Range Officer Vinoto K. Rochill praised the initiative, calling it a meaningful contribution to environmental protection and community participation. The programme was chaired by Viyikhu Q. Wotsa, President of the NPF Pughoboto Division. The invocation prayer was offered by Aghali Sheqi, Women Pastor, PTBC.

Nagaland Women Vocational Training Institute.

 

Nagaland Women Vocational Training Institute (NWVTI) conducted environmental activities at its Kohima and Dimapur centres. At the Kohima Centre, trainees and staff conducted a plantation drive to promote a greener and healthier environment. At the Dimapur Centre, participants carried out a cleanliness drive and environmental awareness programme, emphasising the importance of keeping surroundings clean and protecting nature.

JN Aier College.

 

NSS and NCC Units of JN Aier College organised a tree plantation drive under the theme "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam." Students and faculty members participated in the programme by planting flowering plants within the college campus. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage the protection and preservation of nature.

Newman Higher Secondary School, Tobu.

 

Newman Higher Secondary School, Tobu, in collaboration with its NSS unit, conducted a series of activities. Students participated in a cleanliness drive, collecting plastics, cans and other waste, which was sent to the local dumping site for segregation. Saplings were planted on campus, followed by a painting competition. The school association installed dustbins at key locations across the village. A total of 750 students took part in the initiative.

MGM School

 

MGM Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, organized an Eco-Friendly Fashion Show, where students creatively designed costumes using waste and recycled materials to highlight the importance of reducing and reusing waste. Vice President Fr Giju George reminded the gathering that plants, animals and humans depend on one another for survival. Principal Reji Abraham encouraged students to reduce plastic waste, avoid careless disposal, use reusable bottles and minimize plastic carry bags, noting that blocked drains and flooding often result from discarded plastic.

Lampong Wakching Village Council.

 

Under the theme ‘Clean and Green Village,’ the Lampong Wakching village council organised a programme featuring a community-led cleanliness drive, proper waste management, and sustainable grassroots practices. Saplings were issued by the DFO, Mon, and the Range Officer, Kohima Divisional Forest Office. A roadside plantation drive saw participation from VCs, GBs, VDBs, SHGs, students, youths, and the public, with Pine, Cherry Blossom, and Gulmohar saplings planted across three village wards. The Lampong Wakching Students’ Union and Youth constructed bamboo waste bins at junctions, the bus stand and the marketplace.

Dimapur Naga Students’ Union.

 

Under the theme “My City, My Responsibility,” the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) conducted a cleanliness drive along the stretch from Hotel Tragopan Junction to Khermahal Police Point. Articipants including representatives from DNSU units, students, and teachers from Neingulie Memorial High School, HMC School, and Trinity School cleared roadside waste, cleaned public spaces, and raised awareness on urban cleanliness. The DNSU extends its sincere thanks to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) councillors of wards 3 and 13 for their support.

New Jalukie Village, Peren District.

 

New Jalukie Village, Peren District, observed the day through a programme jointly organized by the village council, youth organization, and women’s society. Attendees included SHG members, Nagaland University students, village leaders, and citizens. Resource person Aphun Gonmei shared insights on environmental conservation, emphasizing community participation in safeguarding natural resources and maintaining a clean, sustainable environment.

 

Naga People’s Front (NPF) conducted extensive tree plantation activities across Nagaland, designating June as “Plantation and Environmental Related Activities Month” under the party’s annual calendar. NPF divisions in all districts mobilized workers to plant saplings in public spaces, roadsides, and community lands. The Central Youth, Women, and Minority Wings, along with their state and district units, actively participated. Many divisions collaborated with district administration, forest department officials, and village councils to ensure proper site selection and long-term sapling care. “Environmental protection is not a one-day event,” said senior party leader Benjamin Lorin during a drive in Kohima. “June as Plantation Month reflects NPF’s long-term vision of a green Nagaland.” Saplings of indigenous and fruit-bearing trees were planted for both ecological and community benefits.

Balijan English School (Bokajan sub-division, Karbi Anglong, Assam) observed World Environment Day on its campus. Students and teachers planted trees including Peepal, Guava, Rose, Jackfruit, and Mango, among others.
