Where is the Civic Sense?: Shot taken from the main gate of Stepping Stones, centre for preschool children at Duncan Bosti Dimapur. Several meters away, garbage is seen littered till the gates of Vivekananda Blooming Bud School. The garbage has not been lying for weeks now, and foul stench is emanating making it impossible for passersby to walk by and posing a serious health threat to children of the two schools. Dimapur | September 16 : Cleanliness is next to Godliness, one of the first phrases taught in school. But the teachers of two schools in Dimapur are having a hard time teaching their school children this often repeated phrase. In Duncan Bosti Dimapur, right in between two institutions, Vivekananda Blooming Bud School and Stepping Stones, there is a huge pile of rubbish strewn all over. For the passerby it is also hard to breathe as no one has turned up to collect garbage for weeks. So imagine the plight of the children who are in school for the most part of the day.
Refuse includes household leftovers, food, garbage from shops etc. It was even reported that some days ago, a dead dog was thrown in the pile, adding to the stench. This spot is not one of garbage disposal sites demarcated by the Dimapur Municipal Council. But it does not seem to have deterred colony residents and business owners to refrain from throwing rubbish. The area outside the school has become a soft spot for dumping garbage, which allows mosquitoes and flies to thrive on it. The area smells so pungent that one can hardly breathe while passing from there.
When this reporter dropped in unannounced to Vivekananda Blooming Bud School, it was a surprise when the principal S. Kaur immediately whipped out a letter he had written to the Advisor of Dimapur Municipal Council. The letter was sent on July 11, 2011 and the headmaster informed that there has been no response so far. S. Kaur said that in the letter he had mentioned the deplorable condition adjacent to the entrance gate of the institution, where heaps of garbage is thrown inconsiderately by the general public of the area. He further suggested erecting a dump in a suitable place so that both children and passerby may benefit. He also said that he had approached one of the GBs of Duncan Bosti and informed him of the issue. The headmaster said that he is concerned for the health of the school children.
Also, next to Vivekananda Blooming Bud School, is Stepping Stones, a creative learning centre for preschool children. Akhono, one of the directors also expressed worry that the garbage strewn over was a big health hazard to the students. She said that previously she has spoken to the shopkeepers nearby the School, and they had all denied throwing garbage around that area. In fact, she says that the shopkeepers had supplemented that it may be the work of people from neighboring colonies who come to throw garbage at night. Akhono also said that the stench emanating from the garbage pile was so strong that it reaches the classrooms, which is in fact quite a distance from the main road. This is because the garbage has been left lying attended for weeks now.
A resident of the area said that DMC garbage collection vehicle used to pick up the garbage even though the site was not demarcated for garbage disposal.
But that is also sporadic, and it has been weeks since the garbage has been picked up. It was also remarked that most officers heading to DC office, Colleges and Schools has to pass this area. But the only thing everyone seems to do is cover their nose and mouth and skip the area as fast as possible.
