The Government Primary School for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) at Lerie, Kohima observed Children's Day cum Prize Distribution Day today.

Principal Director, Department of School Education, Government of Nagaland, Thavaseelan K, IAS who was addressing the programme as special guest asked teachers to keep updating on the latest forms of pedagogical teaching methods and equip themselves with more skills required for teaching.

Remarking that the school has many children with special needs, which was about 10% of the total enrolment, he said this in turn requires more patience of the teachers in dealing with these children to ensure that they learn alongside other students.

He lauded the School Management Committee (SMC) and teachers for investing in the improvement of the school and said they were playing multiple roles as mentors, facilitators, counselors etc.

Thavaseelan asked the children to maintain healthy mind and healthy body to focus well in academics.

He said that not taking care of the mind and body in terms of having physical activity will in turn hamper education, pointing that education in turn will be the foundation of the future.

Thavaseelan also asked children to start consuming knowledge along the growing stage. "What you seek and what you consume, and how far we go in life is going to be a question of how we can seek and assimilate knowledge," he underscored and observed that lots of knowledge can be accumulated outside the school as well.

Practical knowledge, the Principal Director added was critical for overall growth of the children. The speaker also advised student to respect their teachers, parents and have faith in God.

Kedivi Mekro, Teacher Incharge while delivering a short speech informed that there are 116 students in the current academic session, including 15 Children With Special Needs (CWSN) which he said is being well managed through the efforts and dedication of School Management Committee and teachers. For the CWSN, the school is facilitated with 1 physiotherapy and 1 special teacher. He said that other CWSN parents were eager to bring their children to the school.

Urging the department over the need for upgradation, Mekro said the SMC and Colony has proposal for up-gradation to GMS status and was waiting for clearance from State Level Education Committee (SLEC).

Other concerns, he shared in this relation was distance of the school to the nearest Government Middle School which at Aradura Hill about 1 to 2 Km away. Children have to cross National Highway which is busy and prone to accident and after Class 5 standard, they find difficulty to get admission in the nearest GMS as almost 60% of the children come from underprivileged families.

The school has added more subjects to the curriculum and from the coming session, Class 6 will be added.

Earlier, Lilavati Kivini Kachari led the programme and Tepuchano Kikhi announced prizes for the sports and literary competitions. Songs were presented by Class B, Chunbenthung, CWSN, Muthian, while the teachers and Class 1 presented choreography.
