Kiphire: Women farmers trained on improved agricultural practices

Kiphire, February 12 (MExN): A one-day training on improved agricultural practices for livelihood generation cum valedictory programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kiphire in collaboration with district administration, MSK and DRDA, Kiphire at Hopongyu Memorial Hall, Kiphire on February 12. 

A press release stated that the resource persons included Sepila Sangtam, AC, NSRLM, Kiphire, Thungjano Tsopoe, Agriculture Inspector, DAO, Kiphire and Senti Longchar, DHO, Kiphire.

Speaking on the topic ‘value addition on fruits and vegetables’, Sepila Sangtam informed that processed products such as wine, candy and jam can be made out of these fruits and vegetables at home scale which will help in generating income. She highlighted on the various methods involved in making wine and jam out of wild apple, passion fruit, banana, pineapple, plum, ginger and goose berry where the farmers actively interacted. Importance and usage of vermicomposting was highlighted by Thungjano Tsopoe, where she deliberated on various steps and methods involved in the production of vermicompost. She informed that vermicompost which is called as the black gold is an ideal organic source of nutrients for crops and as such encouraged the gathering to take up the enterprise for generating income. 

The topic on Naga King chilly cultivation was taken up by Senti Longchar, where a detail cultivation methods from nursery management to management in the main field was discussed. He informed that the king chill cultivation is a high returning crops which he substantiated by working out the cost benefit ratio. 

A short valedictory programme was held after the technical session with Imlijungla Lemtur EAC, Kiphire as the special guest. Speaking on the occasion, she encouraged the farmers present to be strong willed in whatever activities they take up, be it homestead or farm related. She also spoke on women empowerment and highlighted on the activities of MSK which is working solely for the women folk for securing their livelihood. 

A brief report was presented by Dr N Khumdemo Ezung, Senior Scientist and Head (i/c) and Training Co-ordinator, where he informed that a total of 120 SHGs were covered benefitting 600 farm women through this programme. He added that a total of 120 knapsack sprayer, 600 packet of yellow sticky trap, 600 number of maize sheller, 600 numbers of garden rake and 600 numbers of bio-pesticide were distributed to all the participating farmers from five different blocks of Kiphire i.e., Kiphire, Longmatra, Pungro, Sitimi and Khonsa where four training programs were conducted in each block.

He expressed gratitude to the District Administration for sponsoring the program, NSRLM team, Kiphire for the strong co-ordination with the SHGs, NSRLM, DHO and DAO, Kiphire for deputing the resource persons making the program a grand success. During the programme, inputs such as garden rake, maize sheller, yellow sticky trap, bio-pesticide and knapsack sprayer were distributed to all the participating farmers.

Altogether, 60 farm women from 12 SHGs participated in the day long training. The programme was chaired by Temjenna Jamir SMS DAMU, KVK Kiphire and vote of thanks was delivered by Seroba Sangtam, HEA, DHO Kiphire.
