Dimapur, September 7 (MExN): The Kuki Tribal Union (KTU) under the NSCN/GPRN today issued a statement advising against supporting the current demand for separate district in Manipur, ‘Sadar Hill District’ by the Kuki community. The KTU said the Kuki community has two options namely, to live with the Nagas peacefully or “losing our future with the sugar coated name of Sadar Hills District.”
“There are two things before us (for Kukis): to live with Naga brothers peacefully in the land where we are living in or losing our future with the sugar coated name of Sadar Hill district,” stated the KTU through its president LH Paoho.
The KTU said the demand has been “deadly opposing” by the Naga people because their territory is to be divided to create the demanded ‘district’. “Nagas have clearly said that they don’t oppose creating of Sadar hill district but it cannot touch even an inch of Nagas’ land. So it becomes a bond of contention between the Nagas and the Kukis,” the KTU said.
According to the statement, “the Nagas and Kukis are inseparable in many ways. Many years ago our forefather came from the same land – Mongolia. Today we might have different tribal names but Nagas and Kukis, the two communities are from the same stock, therefore we are inseparable.”
The KTU said both the peoples have embraced Christianity and both being ‘hills people’ have “almost the same culture and custom.” In the past they may have “many tales of hatred and wails,” the Kuki Tribal Union admitted. “In spite of these historical facts some vested interest persons have been trying to distort the course of history by their own whims.
This is the root of trouble against our peaceful co-existence,” the KTU said.
At this critical juncture, the organization said, “we should not be carried away by the whims of the others. Let us go down into the reality and shape our future.” The KTU added a caution – “whether you like it or not, the Nagas and Meiteis are going to part very soon and Kukis would be sandwiched between them. Some politically conscious leaders of Meiteis are well aware of the impending danger looming once the demand of Sardar hill district is granted by the communal government of Manipur. Hence let us not be like ship without radar.”
